Young Students Performing Shakespeare at the CCS Summer Academy
Pottstown, PA, June 4, 2012 – Coventry Christian Schools (CCS) is offering a diverse catalog of 16 different academic enrichment, arts and recreation classes to children of all ages throughout the tri-county area. Among them are two uncommon arts camps. Children in grades 4-12 with no previous acting experience can perform the works of Shakespeare in a dynamic and fun camp learning acting, stage combat and slap-stick comedy techniques. Also, during the week of July 23rd, children in grades 2-12 can participate in small chamber music ensembles to stretch their musical muscles next to other dedicated musicians playing string, brass, or woodwind instruments. This is a fantastic way for students of music to make progress over the summer. The goal of CCS’s new Summer Academy is to provide courses of exceptional quality to highly motivated students who wish to learn new skills, have fun, or just to keep sharp over the summer.
Throughout the summer, students can prepare for the SAT’s with courses that focus on the Math and Vocabulary portions of the exam. Violin lessons are available to people of all ages from adults to children, even those as young as 3 years old. Other courses include Writing, Western Civilization, Drawing, Philosophy, Grammar, Financial Planning, Latin, Shakespeare’s Tragedies and Comedies, Knitting, The Joy of Algebra... even Table Tennis!
Scott Minor, the Summer Academy Director and instructor for the Shakespeare Performance Camp, has been teaching Shakespeare to children since 1998. He says, “Everyone has a ton of fun discovering the excitement of performing Shakespeare’s words. Even the youngest children have great success in this program because we don’t get bogged down trying to read it. Speaking the words is a much more effective way for children to learn that Shakespeare is really nothing to be afraid of.” The Shakespeare Performance Camp starts June 18th.
