Environmental Group Challenges Limerick License Renewal

The Limerick Generating Station's renewal may have some bumps in the road.

From The Associated Press

HARRISBURG — An environmental group is trying to intervene in the re-licensing application of the Limerick nuclear power plant, saying owner Exelon hasn’t conducted a legally adequate environmental analysis.

The National Resources Defense Council filed the petition last week. A spokesman for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission says an independent three-person panel will look at whether the NRDC has standing to intervene, and whether its complaints are worthy of an inquiry.

Exelon says the claims are unfounded.

two nuclear reactors are each operating under a 40-year license, and Exelon is seeking 20-year renewals to extend through 2044 and 2040.

Out of the nation’s 104 operational nuclear power reactors, the NRC says 71 have been approved for license renewals, while 14, including the Limerick units, are under review.
