A Royersford couple is operating a new business where they hope to save clients money on all types of flooring.
A little over 20 years ago, a young man decided he would enter the carpet cleaning business. From there, he began an apprenticeship and learned how to install carpets. He took the next step, learning the ins and outs of hardwood and tile flooring. He was taught everything by one of his friends in the trade. Now, Ben Schreffler, 39 of Royersford, has made another big life decision: to own his own business.
Over the course of his career, Schreffler has been subcontracting for all sorts of businesses, including big name home improvement stores. But, with the knowledge and experience he had, he and his girlfriend, Lyndsey Getty, decided it was time to make his own money, and help others save theirs.
"If you can walk on it we can install it!" said Getty, who recently designed business cards and a new website for B&B Flooring (http://www.bnbfloors.com), Schreffler's business. "We're operating from home, but we're doing it without a showroom. When you have a showroom, you have all of the costs of a showroom, and you end up having to charge a customer more because you have an electric bill and a lease to afford the showroom. So, we have a bring the showroom to you policy."
Basically, the business operates under the policy that if you want flooring and call them, you tell them what kind of floor you want, what you're interested in, where it's going in your house, how much you need and overall what you're going for. The experts at B&B will then pick some different things you might like, come over to your house, discuss it and try to figure out what would be the best overall look for your house.
Getty was excited to say they just got their rating back from the Better Business Bureau: an A-plus.
"We are coming up to a year since our beautiful hard wood floor was installed and I love it today, just as much as I did day you finished," said Tammy, one of Schreffler's clients, who provided a testimonial to the staff. "[They] did a beautiful job. I was very impressed with the return call I got from Ben."
The customer provided a story about her experience.
"When the floor was installed one of the problems that we had was, should the dish washer need to be replaced, we would need to remove a few floor boards to do so," she continued. "During the install Ben promised if that ever happened, no matter how long after the install, he would help us take care of that. Well last month, our dish washer stopped working and I panicked. I left a message for Ben on Facebook the evening the dishwasher died at around 10 p.m. The next morning at 8 a.m. sharp, Ben was calling me to see when he we needed him to come over. My husband was able to fix the problem without removing the dishwasher but had it not worked out that way, lucky for me, Ben was ready to come and do what he promised he would do almost a year ago. That my friends is the kind of customer service great businesses are made of."
Getty said they started off advertising the new business with just a Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/BB-Flooring-LLC/258553947539163) page.
"A lot of his business is through word of mouth," she explained. "But it's hard to have word of mouth references. You have to do a job for someone first. We're trying to get through that hump to try us out and see how great it is, then we'll be able to build a repertoire of people just by word of mouth."
B&B Flooring hopes to show people that they can save money going to a private contractor instead of going to a commercial home improvement store, which is their main competitor. Getty said people don't realize they're getting additional fees and charges tacked on by subcontracting jobs.
"We can alleviate and eventually save them money," she said. "In five years, I'd hope we could change people's opinions about private contractors and show them how much better we are than a home improvement store."
Getty continued by saying B&B is all about convenience. "Give us a call, we'll answer immediately or return in 24 hours." They will work around your schedule to bring the showroom to you. Overall, she is confident in her boyfriend's ability to do the job right and for the right price.
"I know he's a great guy," Getty concluded. "I've gone on jobs with him and know he does great work. I just want people to check out the website and see how great his work is."
