Council discusses crosswalks, speed issues, stoplights
Tuesday's Royersford Borough Council meeting was heavy on discussion of multiple traffic issues.
Borough Manager Michael Leonard said in his report that he will be having a meeting with PennDOT on Feb. 24 regarding stoplights and other work needed at First Avenue.
In addition to needing stoplights for traffic control, the road itself needs work now that the bridge is complete.
Leonard said he has invited Rep. Thomas Quigley and State Sen. John Rafferty to attend, as well as the Greater Valley Forge Transportation Management Association.
Leonard also asked what the borough might be able to do to enforce the speed limit, slow traffic down and help with crosswalk safety in the borough.
"I've seen it, people want to get to the restaurants down here [on Main Street], and they can't cross the street," Leonard said. "We have one of the busiest roads in the area right here."
He referenced several recent traffic incidents, including the accident last week where a pedestrian was killed on Lewis Road.
Leonard said that the borough has, in the past, used signs that point out the state law that vehicles should yield to pedestrians, but "the tractor-trailers just run right over them."
Councilman John Kring opined that the problem is a "matter of enforcement" and pointed out that pedestrians also have responsibility once they step into the road.
Kring said that " we have to be there to enforce [the traffic law] when it happens."
One member of the public suggested mock cameras and a slower speed limit. Leonard pointed out that the speed limit is already 25 mph.
While no official vote occurred, the council was in agreement that traffic issues are an ongoing problem.
The Parks and Recreation report included a date for the borough's yearly Easter Egg Hunt, which will be at Victory Park on March 31 at 10:00 a.m. Eggs will be dyed at the Ninth Grade Center on March 29 at 2:00 p.m.
Mayor John Guest announced that the Royersford Police Department received a $500 donation from Phoenixville Federal Bank & Trust. The department will use the donation for its community relations efforts.

I was on Main street on Monday afternoon to visit one of the local businesses. I felt very unsafe as I entered and exited my vehicle while the cars went zooming by .. I'm glad to hear the borough is working on this.
Will the egg hunt at victory park ever consider the use of plastic eggs?

it would bring more people and businesses to main st. if the street was made safer for walkers. you know in other states the people crossing the street have the right away and the law is enforced. perhaps a greater police presences is need on main st until people get the idea that speeding downtown is just unacceptable. as for 18 wheelers running over the signs... perhaps you want to think about placing truck restrictions in the area. its a small town not a cut through for massive trucks. i think personally its been the decay of spring city. big trucks destroying roads and massive industrial zoning where small business should be. don't let royersford's progress but halted by spring city's failure to zone properly!

There is a traffic issue in all of Royersford boro; the kids walking to the high school step off the curb and don't look/have their ear-buds in. This needs to be reinforced in our schools with some education. I have had kids look me in the eye while they walked right out into the street in front of me/my car! Also, in the borough by Royersford Elementary School there are cross streets, some have stop signs one way and others the other way -- NO ONE STOPS!!! I travel these roads daily and within a week I am almost hit at least 2X because those that have the stop sign, DO NOT STOP!! And they are going MUCH faster than the posted 25 MPH. This is early -- around 6:45/7:00 am and again around 4:00-5:00 pm. This isn't prime school time for the elementary kids, however, it is rush hour and the high school students are active -- we need more traffic police especially those in non-marked cars to catch these frequent offenders.

The issue has nothing to do with trucks coming through town. Trucks have been traveling up and down main street and other areas long before most of the people in Royersford moved here. All along first ave there used to be industry and you still have industry down there and you want to restrict truck flow to these businesses. Believe it or not the problem isn't the trucks. The truck might have had to clip those signs because someone opened a door right in front of them. Also the problem with traffic on Main Street has to do with the fact that people are in too much of a hurry anymore and fly up and down that road. Of course that is the same on any road in the boro. As far as walkers having the right away that is correct they do but that doesn't give them the right to walk right out in front of traffic. The case the other week the guy crossed illegally why traffic was coming right at him and the girl couldn't see him. I agree about the kids walking out right in front of traffic all the time. One place this really happens is on Lewis Rd at 7/11 and the school. I am actually surprised a kid hasn't been killed there. But that isn't in the boro so that shows people walking out in front of traffic just isn't a Royersford problem.

I agree that people are in a hurry and need to slow down....It is scary when you stop for someone to cross because you are always afraid the person behind you will not have time to stop due to their speeding or simply not paying attention!! Also has anyone ever tried to cross 2nd Ave or attempt to get in their vehicle especially in the morning .It is not an easy feat at times!! Speeding is a daily occurence on this road...The police do try to enforce the speed limit but keeping up w/ the speeders is a difficult task...they cant be everywhere at all times!!! I am very interested to see the outcome of this situation...I understand growth has increased the traffic on all of our roads but there has to be a solution that is attainable so everyone feels safe!

I have lived here for about 10 yrs and I must say that traffic has increased a whole lot in that time frame. My son has to cross main street to get to school in the morning and I have to tell him to look both ways 2 or 3 times before stepping off the curb. Cars definitely fly down the street past 4th ave down to first because they're no street lights in between. Big rig trucks are just as guilty as smaller cars and suv's who speed down the road I have witnessed that personally. I'm just afraid that nothing seriously will be done until some gets seriously hurt or killed trying to cross the downtown part of main street in royersford until something is enforced!

Travelling East From 5th Ave towards Lewis Rd is the longest stretch on Main without a light, and some just use it as a drag strip.
