A student at Pope John Paul II High School was seriously injured in a head-on collision on Swamp Pike in Limerick on Friday afternoon.

The school said on its Facebook page on Friday night that senior Maddie Maurer was in stable condition in the ICU following the three-car accident near the grounds of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish, where students were in the process of being dismissed from school when the crash took place at about 2:45 p.m.

Chief William Albany of the Limerick Township Police Department said that the crash involved two female drivers, later identified by the school as Maurer and fellow student Meghan Kugler, traveling westbound on the roadway, and an as-yet unidentified male driver in a truck headed eastbound.

Maurer was most seriously injured and was taken to Reading Hospital by MedEvac helicopter, Albany said.

The truck and one of the two cars were spun around by the force of the impact, which also flipped the truck on its side. Maurer's westbound car was heavily damaged and came to rest pointing eastbound in the westbound lane, trapping Maurer inside. A second car driven by Kugler came to rest on the shoulder a short distance away.

Jennifer Mondillo, a nurse practitioner, was in the car pickup line at Blessed Teresa when she heard the crash and saw the truck flip in her rearview mirror. She was among the first people to arrive at the scene, before emergency responders. She attempted to aid Maurer, who she believed was the most severely injured.

"I asked [Kugler] her name, and she told me. I put my hand on her shoulder and kept calling [Maurer's] name to keep her alert," Mondillo said. "She was staring right at me."

Mondillo said the male driver of the truck emerged from the wreck under his own power. He attempted to comfort Kugler, who was also up and moving under her own power, Mondillo said.

"I had a helpless feeling.There was nothing I could do. I couldn't reach her. [Maurer] was trapped inside the car," Mondillo said.

"Meghan Kugler is fine," the school said in its Facebook update.

Rescuers could be seen stabilizing one of the crash victims, now believed to be Maurer, near a waiting ambulance at 3:40 p.m. She was then escorted onto the waiting helicopter, which took off moments later.

Albany said the crash was still under investigation. Police said Swamp Pike would remain closed until about 8 p.m. Friday.

A multiple-vehicle accident closed a large section of Swamp Pike near Neiffer Road at approximately 2:45pm on Friday. 

The crash was a head-on collision. Three cars were involved, with three injured, one critically.

A Mid-Atlantic MedEvac helicopter transported the critically-injured victim to a trauma center in Reading. It landed on the grounds of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church and school. The other two victims were transported by ambulance.

Limerick Township police chief William Albany declined to identify which of the three victims was transported by helicopter because family members have not been notified. 

Swamp Pike will remain closed between Neiffer Road and Sankey Road while they investigate the accident and clear the area.
