Was That An Earthquake? No, Says USGS

Residents reported hearing a rumbling early this afternoon.

Several area residents reported hearing and feeling the ground tremble around 1pm this afternoon in several locations, including near Sunset Road and at the Target on Ridge Pike.

Government officials said Friday afternoon that their instruments had not alerted them to any seismic activity in the area.

"That doesn't mean it wasn't a small earthquake," said Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). "If it were really small, we would have trouble detecting it," Caruso said.

A magnitude 2.1 earthquake struck the New Jersey suburbs of Philadelphia early Nov. 23.
