But will firing defensive coordinator Juan Castillo revive a Philadelphia Eagles defense that shows signs of life but stumbles when games are on the line?

Say what you want about Quarterback Michael Vick and his turnovers, but Vick put the Birds in position to win games against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions the past two weeks.

But the defense didn't get it done.

Coach Andy Reid's hiring of Castillo caught criticism from sports media and the ire of a fan base wondering what work an offensive coordinator could possibly do on the defensive side of the football.

Juan was given a year and the defense put enough stops together in the final four games last season to give him a shot this year.

Even this year, it has seemed like the defense was the strength of the team.

For all the offensive mishaps, it was the defense that held the Lions to two field goals in the first half. The defense kept the Birds in games all season, except for the losing performance against the Arizona Cardinals.

Reid making this move at the bye week is important. With the Birds at 3-3, Reid needs to shake up this team before it's too late.

Castillo lost the confidence of the defense. The players didn't have his back.

That was evident after some of the comments some players made after the Lions game.

Castillo may have been a great offensive line coach. But being a coordinator is a whole different ball game.

And it just wasn't Juan.

Reid needs to right the ship before it sinks. And while Todd Bowles might not be the answer, the new defensive coordinator -- as a former player -- has the respect of the players.

That's a start. Things can't get much worse.
