Finding the WOW! factor...
Most of the time when not fishing I'm thinking about it, planning it, wishing it or writing and reading something about it. The numerous web sites that I follow keep me up to date with the current tackle, seasons and fishing reports. After awhile the cycle repeats itself and gets a bit redundant. However, every now and then I come across something that really catches my attention because of it's ground breaking theory, innovative approach or even a picture that is different from the normal. This time around it was a series of pictures with a real "WOW" factor.
If you follow "Fishing Fever" there is no doubt that you know I travel to Canada pretty often. The Bay of Quinte and surrounding area have been my stomping grounds since the mid 1980's. Just about 40 kilometers west of Kingston, the BOQ is known for it's trophy walleye. Although the BOQ has gone through major changes since then it still produces ten pound plus Walleye on a regular basis. Lucky are we to have this fishery at our back door!
I keep up with the changing times, fishing methods and conditions by a daily visit to the main web site for fishing reports. If you view the site there will be a link for joining. The folks that use the forums there are a serious bunch and their posts are very informative. They are, for the most part, local residents and at least for now have the tactics well in hand. The site is maintained and monitored by "Dan" the webmaster. As seasons change so do their reports. The late Fall and early Winter is the time for monster walleye. Picture after picture of these trophies are posted and I appreciate each and every one. After a while the snap shots start to look alike and one may actually become disinterested if you can believe that.
Last week while on my virtual visit I came across a posting that brought my mouse to a sudden stop. One of the anglers, Scott Walcott, had taken time to rig up his camera and capture a few walleye in a way that turned out to be very spectacular! My intention here is to share his pictures with you and perhaps infect a dose of "Fishing Fever". Scott also runs a business up there called West Lake Willows. Scott captured these pictures of walleye, below the surface, that had fallen victim to his deep running lures. The preferred method this time of year is trolling with planner boards at precise depths, locations and various lure colors. The big walleyes, referred to as "girls" are just now moving into the bay from Lake Ontario. They are the main attraction now and right through winter. This time of year, including the coming ice fishing season, always has the possibility of a fifteen pound or even larger trophy walleye.
As the seasons change I look forward to ice fishing some of the local lakes around our area. I hope the forcasted colder winter comes true so that "Fishing Fever" can show you how HOT ice fishing can be!
