Book Reading and Signing in Royersford
On December 1, 2012, Open Door Ministry will host a book reading and signing at Main Street Café, 263 Main Street, Royersford, PA. The program will begin at 5:30 PM, featuring readings from the work of Scott Heydt, Lee Fishman, Pam Garlick and Kevin Rebbie. Dinner is included in the price of $15, and guests have choice of a chicken or seafood entrée. Reservations required to guarantee seating, by calling 610-948-4818.
Scott Heydt will be reading from his latest young adult novel, Mice Don’t Taste Like Chicken. Heydt grew up in suburban Philadelphia and now resides with his wife in Chalfont, PA. An educational consultant in social-emotional issues such as bullying, hazing and diversity as well as a fourth grade classroom teacher, Scott attributes his passion for and knowledge of writing to the great teachers who guided him in the past. He is the author of two novels for young audiences.
Lee Fishman lives in Philadelphia and worked until recently at the Free Library promoting author lectures and other cultural events. With an interest in other cultures and customs, Fishman was inspired to write Edge of a Dream, from which she will be reading, the story of an immigrant couple who flee a devastating cival war only to confront different challenges as they start a new life in America. Time spent as a career coach and ESL volunteer presented opportunities to work closely with New Americans. That experience provided understanding of the challenges newcomers face in adapting to our way of life. Fishman has a B.A. in English from Temple University and a Masters from Drexel. She is a member of International Thriller Writers and Pennwriters. Edge of a Dream is her first novel.
Twas The Night Before Christmas is the title of the short story Pam Garlick will be reading, from her fourth collection of short stories under the title This and That – Christmas. However, if one expects this story to be like the original holiday tale of the same name, they will be in for a surprise. The story is of modern – not always good times, with a touch of humor thrown in.
Garlick resides with her husband, Ken in Gilbertsville, PA and enjoys spending as much time as she can with her four grandchildren. She has been published for nearly 25 years in various media, most recognizable her nine novels, four short story collections and numerous shorter fiction novellas. Garlick is also a member of Pennwriters.
Open Door’s fourth author, Kevin Rebbie of Royersford hasn't looked back since publishing his first book, Mr. Stinkas and the Little Cheese Shop. However, the idea of the cheese-cuttin' town savior didn't come to Rebbie over night - it took years of thinking and months of writing to come to fruition.
Today, through the Internet, talking to people on the streets, in stores and across the globe, Rebbie hopes to make Stinkas a household name, like Dr. Seuss's famed masterpiece Green Eggs and Ham. By doing so, he also hope to make it a special bonding mechanism for parents and kids to share.
The book comes with a CD that the author recommends listening to the first time, as it has sounds that go with the story, while being told by an Irish fellow. Rebbie will be reading from this very enjoyable book.
Proceeds from the event will be used to help fund the hunger relief programs operated by Open Door Ministry out of their 350 Main Street, Royersford, location. Each month they provide food to families living below the 185% poverty level. As well, Open Door operates a Senior Food Program, and Love Bags for those who find themselves in need and do not qualify for the monthly food distribution. In January, they will start a healthy lifestyle program for youth of their participants called the Kid’s Back Pack Program. Details on any of these programs and other information about Open Door can be obtained by calling 610-948-4818, or by e-mail at
