Come Sail Away into the Sunset during SNAP’s Public Opening May 31

Visitors will be transported to a dreamy scene of sand, surf and cruises as they view the magnificent mural crafted by the high school Art Club created for this year’s SNAP program—Students Need an Alternative Party. From 6:30 to 9 p.m. on May 31 the public can marvel at the 20 feet-by-9 feet back drop of a sailing cruise ship at sunset, which was completely produced by students.

“It was a lot of fun and the back drop turned out well,” student artist Emma Coath said. She and her partner Andrew Hvazda researched and designed it. “The sunset is wonderful and there’s a hint of beach in it. It’s an addition to SNAP we can be proud of.”

The back drop is a painting that sticks to this year’s theme of “Come Sail on the USS Spring-Ford.” It is an impressionistic piece of a sailing cruise ship on the dark sea with a dreamy sunset behind it. A sliver of beach can be seen at one side. Impressionism is denoted by the exaggerated colors and short brush strokes. It was selected by Emma and Andrew because it accentuates the movement of the water and the layers of color in the sunset.

SNAP is a post-prom event for all Spring-Ford Area High School juniors and seniors whether they choose to attend prom or not. It was started by a group of parents and community members working with the Spring-Ford Education Foundation as a way to keep students safe in the hours after prom ends.

“This is the first year we’ve done the SNAP mural,” Art Club advisor Amy Culp said. “The students enjoyed doing it. They gave us the theme to work with but the students decided on the design and style, so it was something to challenge them. They did a wonderful job.”
