Public names “Under the Sea” Best Tasting Cake for Spring-Ford High School Family and Consumer Science Club Competition at Festival of the Arts

The community has spoken for the best tasting cake in the Spring-Ford Senior High School Family and Consumer Science Club (FCS) contest held during the Festival of the Arts May 2 and 3. The club asked the community to taste 14 cakes to select the best student prepared and decorated creation. When the votes were totaled, “Under the Sea” by students Lilly Mansmann and Rebecca Cannizarro was selected as the tastiest and the second best decorated.

In first place for decoration was “Olaf Goes to the Beach” by students Maddy Zimmerman and Sarah Hancock. Both sets of winners received a gift card to their local grocery stores. “Under the Sea” also won its creators tickets to Longwood Gardens.

“It’s a great event where we ask the community to cast their ballot for not only the best tasting cake but the best decorated  one, as well,” FCS Advisor Peggy Wright said. “We’ve done this several times in order to raise money and promote creativity among the student body and it is always a fun time.”

For $1, visitors to the Festival of the Arts at the high school had the chance to sample each creation that competed for the tastiest cake title. Once they had tasted each, the sampler was able to cast their vote for the best cake. For an additional $1, visitors could vote for the best decorated cake as well. Any student enrolled at the high school was eligible to participate, so skill level and experience ranged from beginner to advance.

“It’s amazing the ideas students come up with,” Wright said. “We had quite a variety this year, ranging from castles to Disney movies. We even had one student group decorate their cake with an astronaut. This is not only a tasty competition, but it encourages our students to let their imaginations run wild.”

All proceeds from the cake competition were split between the FCS scholarship, which is given to one graduating senior who plans to pursue an FCS-related major in college each year, and the club’s annually sponsored charity. This year, the club will be donating to Heifer International, which strives to eradicate hunger and poverty by teaching communities how to sustain themselves through donations of farming animals and fish.
