Public to Select High School Cake Competition Winners May 2-3

A sweet feast will be waiting for visitors to the Festival of the Arts May 2 and 3 as the Spring-Ford Senior High School Family and Consumer Science Club (FCS) asks the community to taste a variety of cakes to select the best student prepared and decorated creation.

“It’s a great event where we ask the community to cast their ballot for not only the best tasting cake and the best decorated  one,” FCS Advisor Peggy Wright said. “We’ve done this several times in order to raise money and promote creativity among the student body and it is always a fun time.”

For $1, visitors to the Festival of the Arts at the high school can sample each creation that is competing for the title of tastiest cake. After tasting each, the sampler can cast their vote for the best cake. For an additional $1, visitors vote for the best decorated cake as well. Any student enrolled at the high school is eligible to participate, so skill level and experience will be wide ranging.

“We’ve got students talking about making circus cakes and building castles for their entries. Last year we had a student submit a cake decorated as a Japanese garden,” Wright said. “Students really go all out for this creative competition. I’m excited to see what styles and decorations they submit this year.”

All proceeds from the cake competition are split between the FCS scholarship, which is given to one graduating club member each year, and the club’s annually sponsored charity. This year, the club will be donating to Heifer International, which strives to eradicate hunger and poverty by teaching communities how to sustain themselves by donating gifts like livestock, farming tools and irrigation systems.

“It’s eating cake and helping others, what’s not to enjoy?” Wright said. “Who doesn’t love cake?”

Festival of the Arts will be at the senior high school from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 2 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3. The high school is located at 350 South Lewis Road in Royersford.
