Cultivating Love for Ourselves and Others

Self-love means accepting ourselves for who we really are. Not only our perceived perfection and achievements, but also our imperfections.

Loving Ourselves First

On the surface, the subject of self-love sounds very selfish. Shouldn't we be loving others first? We may be concerned about being seen as vain or conceited for loving themselves. But self-love in its deepest sense has little to do with being self-centered. Unconditional love, the love that is present without requirements, expectations or obligations, not only applies to others around us but also to ourselves. How can we give love and compassion to others without first having love in our hearts? In order for us to truly love another, we have to first love ourselves. We can only give love away if we have it in our hearts. Without love, we allow room for fear. Then, fear becomes the energy that we vibrate around us.

Unconditional Love

Self-love means accepting ourselves for who we really are. Not only our perceived perfection and achievements, but also our imperfections. We practice self-love when we can be honest with ourselves and acknowledge our own weaknesses -- and still accept that we can only be better than who we used to be. We recognize our mistakes, but we don't beat ourselves up for it. Instead, we forgive ourselves, commit to be better, and move on.

Rose Quartz Teaches Us to Love Ourselves

Rose Quartz is a stone of love that helps to open the heart and connect to the energy of love. It is rejuvenating to both the physical and emotional body and assists the wearer to remain present, calm and peaceful. Rose Quartz is the stone of unconditional love and infinite peace. It is the most important crystal for the heart, teaching the true essence of love.

Positive Affirmations and Meditating with Rose Quartz

Holding or wearing Rose Quartz enhances positive affirmations. Meditating with Rose Quartz is truly a beautiful experience. I have meditated with other stones but have felt so much more loving energy with Rose Quartz. Of course, your experience may be different and you may resonate more with another stone. Try out different stones in your meditations and find the one that works best for you.

  • Lay down on your back, or sit on a chair with your back straight.
  • Hold the stone on your chest, with your hands over the stone. The stone's vibration is enhanced with the energy that radiates out of our hands.
  • Use positive affirmations, say each of the affirmations inwardly or out loud three times.

(Below are affirmations from  the Creative Visualization Meditations CD by Shakti Gawain. The meditation CD is available from the MONTCO library).

Remember that these are affirmations of the divine perfection that lies within each of us. The more we consciously absorb them, the more the outer forms in our lives will change to reflect that inner perfection.

I am a radiant being, filled with light and love

I am naturally healthy, energetic and filled with vitality

Every day, I am learning to love and appreciate myself more and more

I love all of myself, including my body, my mind and all of my feelings

The more I love and appreciate myself, the more love I have to give to others

I now give and receive love, fully and freely

I am now attracting and creating loving, satisfying relationships in my life

I am now attuned to my higher purpose and my life is unfolding exactly as it needs to

So be it, so it is.
