As we head into the winter months, you may have nightmares
about whether your heating system should be replaced or whether it will last
through another cold winter. Replacing a heat pump, furnace or boiler can be
expensive and it is hard to know whether your investment will be worth it.
Some of the signs that your heater needs replacing are:
- Your heating system needs frequent repairs.
- There are odors associated with your heater
- Your energy bills are rising. Remember, energy costs are
going up so you don’t simply want to look at the price you are paying for heat
but at the amount of energy or fuel you are using.
- Some rooms in your house are consistently too hot or too
- Your home has excessive dust.
- You have humidity problems throughout your home.
- Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
If you have a heat pump or air-conditioner that is more than
10 years old, you may do better with an ENERGY STAR high efficiency heater.
Newer models can give you up to a 97 percent efficiency, meaning that 97
percent of your fuel is used for heating. Some older models have an efficiency
of between 50 and 80 percent. Today, the lowest efficiency ratings are 80
percent, even for furnaces and boilers. A new, high efficiency heating system might save you up to 20 percent on your heating bills.
To figure out your savings and how soon you can recoup your
investment into a new heating system, add up all the costs associated with
heating or cooling your home and multiply by 20 percent. This will show your
possible savings. Divide that by the cost of installing a new system to find
out how many years it will take to make up any money you spend on a new heater.
