Murky Tap Water Question at Spring City Borough Council Meeting Yields Cloudy Response

At the October 7th Spring City Borough Council Meeting, Noah Cittadino of Chestnut Street  remarked that he had noticed recently  that the water coming out of the tap had been more “murky” than usual and asked Council if they knew what was causing it. Council President DiGuiseppe and Borough Manager Rittenhouse said that if he was concerned about the water quality to contact Pennsylvania American Water but that it was nothing to be worried about. But Noah’s question is probably something that other residents of the Borough have wondered, including myself, and to be honest, I wanted a bit more of an explanation than what was offered.

So I e-mailed Pennsylvania American Water and here was their reply:

Thank you for contacting Pennsylvania American Water in reference to your account.

There have been no recent alerts for accounts in the Spring City area where we provide service.

The increased cloudiness in the water may be dissolved air.  If you draw a glass of water, see if the cloudiness dissapates [sic].  If it clears from the bottom up, it is air bubbles coming out of the water.  If the cloudiness settles from the top down, it is something else.

As the weather cools, our source water also cools.  Cold water can hold more dissolved air than warm water, so as the water arrives at your tap and warms up, the air precipitates out and rises to the top.

In addition to getting an answer to the question about the tap water, I found out something about myself --- I am running for Spring City Borough Council to help individuals and our community as a whole, and how I handled this situation as a fellow resident shows that despite being busy with every day life (work, school, family etc.) I am the kind of neighbor who will take a few minutes to try to solve a problem and/or answer a question to the best of my ability, and my willingness to do so gives me the confidence that if elected to Borough Council, I will do my part to keep the dialogue going between the Borough and its residents.
