Should men and women do the same exercises? Pretty much our muscles are connected and constructed the same. We both contract the muscles the same way.
I do recommend using the proper weight for your body weight and muscle mass. Very light weight with more reps does not develop muscle and muscle is what burns more calories. We must put resistance on the muscle to obtain results, not doing excessive reps; this will also save our joints as we age. If I increase my resistance on an elliptical to achieve my recommended heart rate at 150 revolutions a minute or decrease resistance and do 250 revolutions a minute, there are 100 less revolutions on the joint.
A basic rule of thumb for weight lifting for definition, if you can do less than 8 reps the weight is too heavy, more than 15 reps the weight is too light.
Always keep your goal higher than what you can achieve; we all need to shoot for a goal.
Good tip: start now, don’t wait to make a New Year’s resolution. We need more than 30 days of exercise which equates to about a dozen workouts to make a change. Don’t procrastinate start your exercise program now, the change will come faster than you think and you deserve to look the best that you can.
