Returning To Winter Late This Week

January's shaping up as a volatile month in the weather realm. Temperature roller coasters, soaking rains, and more seem to be the theme of the coming month's weather.

There's quite a lot in the weather realm that's being made of the potential for a pattern flip later on this week. In some respects, the pattern this winter changed about two weeks ago from a generally mild pattern to one with wild oscillations of warmth and chill. November in December, which was how the weather felt for much of the month, was replaced by alternating shots of cold and warmth - a theme that's continued into early January.

We went from the freezer on Tuesday and Wednesday to people wearing shorts this past Saturday as temperatures jumped into the middle 60s. Another such oscillation of temperature is forthcoming this week as the pattern swings back toward chill after a relatively mild start to the week.

While the pattern is generally mild for the first half of the week, it's possible we get some flurries, snow showers, or light snow on Monday afternoon as a weak low scoots through the Carolinas.

The best chances of steadier precipitation will be to our south and an inch of snow accumulation can't be ruled out in Delaware or South Jersey if it falls as snow. Temperatures will moderate for Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of a stronger storm that pushes out of the South, bringing rain to the region Wednesday night along with rising temperatures that could see us exceed 50 degrees on Thursday morning.

Once the southern storm pushes out and rain departs, a cold front in the Lakes will push through and knock temperatures back for next weekend.

Temperatures will drop back into the lower or middle 30s for highs on Saturday and Sunday, with low temperatures back below freezing. Lows at night will be in the 20s, which is a bit colder than usual for January but nothing teeth-chattering or lip busting in nature when compared to past cold outbreaks we've seen at this time of the year. Flurries may fly in the air on Friday afternoon and Saturday as colder air works into the region from Canada.

The core of cold could move through a week from Monday, with highs possibly only in the 20s on Martin Luther King Day; however, temperatures look to moderate towards the middle of next week as another storm may crank up and move through, possibly as rain.
