GALLERY: Local Fire Chief Remembers 9/11 Over the Years

A look back at what a prominent member of the community has done to honor the lives lost and those who fought on 9/11/01.

In light of the 10-year anniversary of the tragic events that occurred on September 11, fire chief Gary Wezel has been putting out flag displays in Royersford.

Royersford Borough Fire Chief Gary Wezel has worked with his firefighters for the past 10 years to create flag displays on the lawn to commemorate the tragic events that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001. Since the origin of the tradition, Wezel and his firefighters have created different displays every year. What started as a simple display of a rectangle of flags became lucrative designs of the twin towers, the historic date and the crest of the New York Fire Department, all wrapped into one large display. In 2010, the display had to be nixed because the ground was too hard to put flags in; however, Wezel is looking to do one in 2011 for the 10-year anniversary. Wezel said 2011 would most likely be the final year he would be creating a display. Wezel oversees Humane Fire Company and Friendship Fire Company in the Royersford Borough. The two companies collaborated in these efforts.
