Two Men Try to Rip off Taxi Driver from Chester

On March 24 at 2:48 p.m., responding Officer Shawn Pancoast was dispatched to 327 W. Ridge Pike for a theft. Upon arrival, he spoke with a cab driver who claimed two males failed to pay a $144.15 tab from Harrah's in Chester.

While police were speaking to the driver, a man exited the house and approached the officers.

"Get the [expletive] off my property!" he exclaimed.

The driver identified the man as one of his passengers. The man continued walking straight toward the officers, yelling profanities and being aggressive. Officer Christopher Iochum and Pancoast told the man to step off and that they would be with him shortly, but the man continued to yell profanities at the officers.

"Don't talk to me, you're only 25 years old," the man said to Iochum.

The man, who was later identified as Steve Demetro, 41 of said address, was asked several times to back off. When he was asked for identification, he replied, "[Expletive] you, I don't have to show you [expletive.]"

He later did show his identification, but with resistance.

"I'm not paying that Iranian," Demetro reportedly said. "He is trying to rip me the [expletive] off."

Demetro told police he took a ride from the same casino before and it was only "$30 or so." Demetro also told police the other passenger was his 16-year-old nephew, who was now inside sleeping. He refused to go in and get the boy, despite requests from the officers.

The cab driver reported to police he told the men he was unfamiliar with the Limerick area, and Demetro agreed to give him directions. Demetro took the driver from I-95 North to 476 North to 76 East. The driver said he asked Demetro three times if getting on 76 East was correct. All three times, Demetro said yes, and then later told him he was going the wrong way.

The driver turned around at City Line Avenue and proceeded to Limerick. The ride took two hours and was a total of 57.03 miles. The tab was never paid and the driver asked to press charges. Police charged Demetro with a criminal retail theft.
