Several local emergency service organizations remind residents to clear fire hydrants when shoveling snow.

The Royersford Fire Department posted a notice to “Adopt-A-Hydrant,” asking residents to clear three feet around all fire hydrants, with clear access from the street.

“A clear path on all four sides makes hydrants easier to locate and operate in an emergency,” according to the notice.

The fire department also asks residents to utilizing off-street parking whenever possible, allowing better access for emergency vehicles and the department of public works to clear roads more effectively.

Where I live, near State College, the fire hydrants were clear and visible, but the water was frozen! Firefighters had to locate a fire hydrant several blocks down that was not frozen. Hope that isn't an issue with your hydrants.
