Pennsylvania State Police will be conducting impaired driving checks over the holiday weekend, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said.

The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign will run through July 6.

During the July Fourth holiday in 2013, PennDOT said, State Police investigated 67 alcohol-related crashes, including four fatalities. Additionally, they charged 411 people with driving under the influence.

PennDOT urged all drivers to be careful on the roads during the holiday weekend. From July 4 to 8, 2013, State Police investigated 845 crashes, which included 312 injures and nine fatalities. Those statistics do not include investigations by local police.

Drive and celebrate safely.

I fail to understand why it is announced that a "DUI check point will be set up....time & date. Makes no sense in my book to alert people who think they are above the law a check point will be set up. It's sort of like when I was in the service - "White Glove Inspection by the IG - next Thursday". Unannounced action serves to net the greatest effect.

They have to announce these checkpoints because checkpoints in and of themselves are unconstitutional. The SCOTUS said that in order for checkpoints to be considered "legal" notice must be given and drivers must have a way to legally avoid the checkpoint. Get educated people. Its not about being above the law, its about asserting YOUR RIGHTS.

First, I stand corrected regarding SCOTUS and consider myself educated as to the "legal" aspects regarding announced check points. I take it that it's okay for a person to throw down a few brews and then hit the highways. I guess it is okay for a drunk driver to infringe on "THE RIGHTS" of another driver... to drive without getting T-boned by a drunk driver. I happened to have a couple of close friends who have been impared....FOR LIFE that were involved in DUI accidents. What happened to the two DUI drivers ??? They were made to wear those bright orange colored monkey jump suits for a few Sundays and tidy up the 422 by-pass and told what they did is a no no, don't do it again.

Need to take that photo down of the four lanes each way. It just upsets Lehigh Valley drivers even more considering Penn Dot built 78 at a great deal of expense and forgot to make it 3 lanes its whole length. So when this needs to be done because it will, especially going up that long hill heading East before the Rt 33 exit (how dumb was that move), we will again have to sit in long lines, a ton of extra cost not needed if they did it right the first time and just get more upset.
