Trial for 2011 UP Hit-and-Run Death Underway

A 75-year-old woman has opted for a jury trial for a hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a 26-year-old girl

NORRISTOWN — A 75-year-old New Hanover woman has placed her fate in the hands of a jury on charges she was the driver responsible for a hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a female pedestrian on an Upper Providence roadway.

Patricia Maurer, of the 2800 block of New Hanover Square Road, has agreed to a jury trial that will begin Tuesday in Montgomery County Court before Judge Joseph A. Smyth.

Assistant District Attorney John Walko and defense lawyer Joseph P. Green Jr. on Monday completed the selection of a panel of 12 jurors and two alternate jurors, who will begin hearing testimony Tuesday. Walko and Green are slated to give their opening statements to the jury in the morning.

Maurer previously entered not guilty pleas to charges of accidents involving death or personal injury, duty to give information and render aid and careless driving in connection with the 1:34 p.m. April 27, 2011, crash that claimed the life of 26-year-old Kristy L. Bender who was walking along the 1200 block of South Township Line Road.
