DEP Holding Hearing on Contaminated Wells in Limerick

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is holding a public hearing  on Wednesday regarding wells that have been tested for trichloroethene (TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE) along Ridge Pike and Royersford, North Township Line and Heffner roads in Limerick Township.

The hearing, held at 7 p.m. at Limerick Township Building, located at 646 West Ridge Pike, will address five properties in the area that were found to be contaminated—three of the property owners already installed carbon filtration systems and the remaining properties have been provided bottled water during the investigation.

DEP’s proposed solution is to install and/or maintain carbon filtration systems on contaminated wells; after two years, the maintenance on these filters would become the responsibility of the homeowner.

The DEP began sampling wells in 2010 upon request from the Montgomery County Health Department and found the five wells to be contaminated out of 150 tested.

The public is asked to attend the meeting to offer comment on the proposed remedy for the situation.
