Limerick PD Members Promoted To Lieutenant, Sergeant

Lieutenant Brian Skelton is the first in the township's history; Sergeant Matthew Daywalt will fill Skelton's vacant position.

The Limerick Township Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to promote two members of the Limerick Township Police force on Tuesday.

Limerick Township Police Chief William Albany announced the two members of the police force – Brian Skelton, who was promoted from sergeant to Lieutenant, and Matthew Daywalt, who was promoted from detective to sergeant.

To start the presentation, Albany offered a history of the police department.

“The Limerick Police Department was founded in the early 1970s and operated in a part-time basis to monitor the number of hunters that visited the township each fall,” Albany said.  “A few years later its members began to work year-round, and over the years the department continued to grow to keep pace with the expansion of residential and business communities.”

Albany said tonight was a “milestone” for the police department, as Skelton will serve as the police department’s first lieutenant. The department now is at full strength with 23 full-time members and two full-time support personnel.

Skelton is a 23-year veteran as the police department who served as the Limerick Police Department liaison officer and as the youth aid coordinator. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2007.

Daywalt came to Limerick Township in 2007 after serving six years with the Lower Moreland Police Department. Daywalt “wasn’t afraid to offer suggestions on how we might do our job better,” and developed and implemented our field training for new officers, Albany said.  In 2010, Daywalt was promoted to detective.

Earlier in the meeting, the township approved the new lieutenant's contract. According to Albany, the police department demonstrated a need for additional oversight in the police department during the 2013 budget discussions with the Limerick Township Board of Supervisors.

“We would not be here tonight without the support of the board, and I thank them,” Albany said.

On July 2, the police department announced that Stephen Winneberger and Stephen Crawford were sworn in as the township’s newest police officers.
