Limerick Power Plant Safety Violations Released in New Report

The plant had four high-level violations, 110 low-level violations, placing it in the middle of the pack for nuclear plants in Pennsylvania, according to the Government Accountability office.


In a list highlighting safety violations of nuclear power plants across the United States, the Limerick Nuclear Power Plant was listed in the middle of the pack, according to a report obtained by the Associated Press.

The Government Accountability Office report states that the Limerick plant had four high-level and 110 low-level violations between 2000 and 2012.

Of the five nuclear power plants in Pennsylvania, Limerick's total number of violations was in the middle - the highest was the Susquehanna plant above Allentown, which had five high-level and 175 low-level violations.  The Peach Bottom plant had four high-level and 131 low-level violations.

Three Mile Island in Middletown, PA had 2 high-level and 131 low-level violations; Beaver Valley in Shippingport had three high-level and 113 low-level violations.

High-level violations include electrical system issues, while low-level violations could include the improper upkeep of of a transformer, according to the AP.
