PA's First West Nile Virus Case From Montgomery County

A Montgomery County man is the first in Pennsylvania to be hospitalized for West Nile Virus.

Pennsylvania's first case of West Nile Virus this year has been identified in Montgomery County, according to a press release from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

The Montgomery County man was hospitalized due to West Nile Virus. A York County man also tested positive for the infection but has not been hospitalized.

DEP has detected West Nile Virus-infected mosquitoes in 36 counties in Pennsylvania, however, the department suggests that it is likely present in other areas of the state as well.

"This year, Pennsylvania is seeing localized outbreaks of WNV, as opposed to the statewide outbreak experienced last year."

To protect yourself from West Nile Virus infected mosquitoes, DEP suggests eliminating standing water around the home. A full list of suggestions are here.

Montgomery County also recommends wearing light and loose fitting clothing, use insect repellent.
