Local School District Sells Unneeded Items on eBay

When the Methacton School District in Montgomery county, PA is faced with an item that the district no longer needs or can use to educate students, Stuart Whiteleather, Director of Business Services for the district, sometimes finds inspiration to generate revenue for the district by eschewing restrictions of geography; it was Whiteleather’s idea to sell the district’s unneeded items on eBay.

He made his recommendation to the school board and the program became official in July of this year. Thus far, the district has netted about $2,000 from copy toner cartridges and a non-operational school bus that had a dead engine and other issues.

As of Oct. 17, some of the eBay items listed for sale include staple cartridges and a computer desk.

“As we found, with the world wide advertisement through eBay, we have a much broader audience. The school bus was sold to a company in South Carolina,” said Whiteleather.

According to the district online, Whiteleather successfully implemented this idea at his former district, generating revenue.

Describing the system as a “win-win” situation where revenue can be generated where there otherwise would be none, he looks forward to more future progress. “I’m just very pleased by the success of the program and I certainly see more positive results coming down the road as the system becomes more formal,” he said.
