Royersford Elementary Students Donate to SPCA, Learn About Pet Ownership

Second graders learned about how to take care of a variety of pets.

Royersford Elementary second graders learned Dec. 13 about pet ownership from the SPCA, after collecting pet food and supplies for the organization.

Montgomery County SPCA Humane Educator Steve Conway visited the students to teach them what it means to be a good pet owner, including how to feed, provide water, train and play with a variety of pets, and what to do if their pet runs away or they find a pet that is lost.

“Second grade children are at an age where they can take on more responsibilities, including taking care of their family pets,” teacher Missie Pogash said. “We decided to have Mr. Conway visit to show students how to take care of their pets. It also ties in with the season of giving as well, since we will be collecting donations of food and supplies.”

The students collected items the SPCA to use in its three shelter locations in Conshohocken, Abington and Perkiomenville. The organization serves roughly 10,000 pets per year.

“It was a great event,” Pogash said. “The students learned a lot and were excited to share their donations with Mr. Conway. They couldn’t stop talking about how they were going to care for their own pets after he left.”
