Spring-Ford Ninth Graders Hold a Thanksgiving Feast

Students in Dana Green's learning support classroom offered up a lunch for administration, faculty and friends on Friday.

Spring-Ford Ninth Grade Center’s learning support and autistic support students put on a Thanksgiving Feast Friday, complete with turnkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce dessert, and more.

"The students love preparing and hosting the Thanksgiving feast,” said teacher Dana Green.  “They are very excited to welcome their parents and administrators into the classroom.”

The menu this year included traditional turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, broccoli, corn, rolls, and cranberry sauce, along with apple crisp, brownies, and turkey cupcakes.

Throughout the process, seven students — five from the full-time support class and two from the autism support class— worked to create a menu, shopping and cooking, and then also to develop the guest list and decorations.

Instructional Assistant Patricia McCormick said that the process also helped with math measuring and considering the number of servings needed for the feast.

Guests at the lunch includes Spring-Ford Area School District Superintendent David Goodin, Assistant Superintendent Allyn J. Roche and Jeanmarie Mason, director of special education at Spring-Ford Area High School.

“This is a great opportunity for the students to show their skills,” said Goodin.  “Not only that, but there is also a hospitality involved– they interact with the guests, welcoming them.  It’s a great program”

Students, who were also joined by some fellow ninth graders, said that they had fun making the food, and that they all worked together to make the feast a success.

“As we get closer and closer to the event their excitement builds and that is all they can focus on which is pretty fitting since the week of the feast is very busy,” said Green.
