Unsung Hero: Boys Bball Senior Ryan Keefe

This week's unsung hero comes off the bench and contributes big game-by-game.

Senior boys basketball player Ryan Keefe is a 6-foot bench player with a lot of integrity and team spirit. In 12 games this season, Keefe has scored 57 points (two Coatesville Holiday Tournament games' statistics were not submitted by Coatesville). Head coach Mike Young said Keefe is an all-around contributor for the team.

"Ryan’s just a great kid and a great contributor to our team," Young said. "You know exactly what you’re going to get from him. You’re going to get hard play, intense play. He’s going to contribute scoring-wise, rebounding, defense, hustle. He knows what we want done, when we want it done."

After his senior year, Keefe will be attending Temple University, where he will get a look at the real-world at a big school. But first, he has one accomplishment he'd like to achieve.

"Honestly, for my athletic career to be complete, I really want a PAC-10 championship," he said. "That’s the goal this year. I think my academics have been okay. I’m going to Temple. But, other than grades, the most important thing is that PAC-10 championship."

Last year, the Rams came close, but came up short to league rival . Keefe said he's looking forward to that matchup the most of all.

"I consider them our biggest rivals," Keefe said. "They beat us twice last year including the championship game. I don’t hate anyone, but if I disliked anyone… That game, we bring it the most. That’s the game I want to win at all costs and perform as well as we can."

On the court, Keefe comes off the bench to match up against guys that are a few inches taller than him. He works on the inside and shows the agility to work against his opponents. On being selected by his coach as the unsung hero this week, Keefe is happy.

"That actually means a lot, because I try to help the team in any way they need it," said Keefe. "If it’s scoring, it’s scoring, if it’s defense, it’s defense. It’s nice that the coach has confidence to put me in there against guys like that and I’m still able to contribute."

Overall, Young and the coaching staff consider Keefe an important part of , and a model for all newcomers to follow.

"He’s a leader and shows all those attributes," Young said. "This is a kid we want all of our kids to be like in our program – someone that younger kids can look up to and say, 'Hey, I may not have the most basketball talent on the team, but I can still contribute some things that need to be done.'"
