Ursinus College and CEDC Present "Dinner and a Show" Event Featuring a Dance Concert and Local Dinner Specials

Ursinus College is again teaming up with The Collegeville Economic Development Corp. (CEDC) to offer “Dinner & a Show” — a night on the town conveniently  in and around town — with 15 local restaurants offering dinner specials to individuals attending the performances of The Ursinus College Dance Company.

The fall dance concert, Waking Dreams, is being performed Nov. 21, 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lenfest Theater of the Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Center. Theatergoers should park in the College’s West parking lot; enter from Ninth Ave.

Performed by Ursinus College dance students, the concert features pieces in different dance styles based on the theme of dreams. The program includes:

Venus/Unraveled, by Assistant Professor Jeanine McCain in collaboration with students of the Dance Majors’ Seminar Course, was originally inspired by the rare astronomical phenomenon of the Transit of Venus (which occurs when Venus passes directly between the Earth and the Sun.) The work has developed through additional research in Venus mythology archetypes, Venus in popular culture and Venus-related personal dreams and stories from McCain and cast members. Through creative use of props, lighting and choreography, the dance creates a physical web in which memory and dreams, of the past and for the future, intertwine.

If Only It Were, by Professor Karen Clemente, explores real events that we wish were dreams – the difficult things that throw us off and affect us in life-changing ways. “We go to bed and wake up hoping that what happened was a dream, only to find that it was real,” she explains. Based on autobiographical events, the dance evolves through a range of emotional contexts that include the acknowledgement of a support system giving comfort, strength and possibilities for moving through.

Mute, by Eun Jung Choi, explores how reality and dreams interface. “For many years I have been captivated by the alteration and the disappearance of events, time laps and other records in my own memory and dreams. This fascination led me to observe how our memory functions over time, and how the images of daily events filter through and alter in the space of dream, memory and desire,” Choi offers.  A native of Seoul, Korea, and co-director of the DaDa Dance Project, Choi has choreographed in Mexico, San Francisco, New York and now Philadelphia.

Back 2 School, by Clyde Evans Jr., reflects Philadelphia school closings, which resulted in some schools accommodating displaced students. A hip-hop-based fantasy, the dance involves new students, a teacher leaving the room, and an assignment about dreams. Besides teaching at Ursinus, Evans teaches at Drexel and at Wesleyan universities and directs Chosen Dance Company, which presents hip-hop as concert dance.  He has been a hip-hop teacher in the region and principal dancer at Rennie Harris Puremovement.

(non)sense, by Jenn Rose, depicts a dream word that goes to many, unexplainable places.  The scenes of the dance are based on recurring dreams the choreographer has had and feature the manipulation of bright, white objects. The music is found from several sources, but mostly from the movie soundtrack “Where the Wild things Are.” Rose is creator/collaborator/producer at 213 Productions and founder/artistic director/choreographer at Loose Screws Contemporary Tap Company. She has choreographed and directed a number of shows at theaters in Philadelphia and the region.

Those who would like to take advantage of the “Dinner & a Show” pre-theatre restaurant specials should order tickets from the CEDC web site, which is www.collegevilledevelopment.org. Tickets are $5 each, or $2 for students and seniors age 65 and over. After reserving tickets online through the site, individuals will be issued a receipt to print and show at the restaurant on the day of the performance to receive the dinner special. Participants will also need to present the receipt at the Ursinus theatre box office in order to pay for and pick up reserved tickets. Theatergoers should arrive at the box office at least 15 minutes before the show begins. A list of restaurants appears below.

It is recommended that those attending Dinner and a Show make their reservations as early as possible; it is recommended that reservations be made no later than 5:30 p.m., since the performance starts at 7:30 p.m.
