Over 350 volunteers from around the Delaware Valley spent their Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at the Greater Norristown Police Athletic League.

On the morning of Jan. 21, over 350 people listened intently as youth from the Greater Norristown Police Athletic League (GNPAL) took turns reading aloud the famous “I Have a Dream” speech by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Addressing the audience from high above in the gymnasium’s balcony, the youth proudly proclaimed the words of King, whose speech relayed his dream that one day citizens of this nation will be free to be judged, not by how they look but on what they do. Before reaching the end of the speech, the audience, most of whom were strangers at that point, was then asked to clasp hands and in unison proclaim the last words of King’s speech: "Free at last! free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!" This was how the …

An MLK Day with Meaning

Your child might think of Monday, Jan. 21 as just another day off from school. But you can use Martin Luther King Jr., Day as an opportunity to teach them about the civil rights movement, the importance of racial equality, Martin Luther King Jr., and his legacy. Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr., Day by talking to your children about King. What do they know about the man, and about the civil rights movement? What do they know about King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech? What do they believe was his intended message? This year, the observance of the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., will be celebrated on Monday, Jan. 21. According to the Office of Personnel Management, by federal law, it is a public holiday for federal employees, with the exception of those in the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland, and Arlington and Fairfax counties and Arlington City in Virginia, where the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday is celebrated concurrently with Inauguration Day. As such, in Montgomery County, PA, post offices will be closed, there will be no residential mail delivery, and state, federal and many municipal government offices will be closed. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the third Monday of each year, celebrates the birthday of the icon. So, without further ado, here are five facts you may not have known about MLK Day (thanks to Wikipedia for the information)! 1. Different Names, Different Reasons - Some states didn't originally want to call today "Martin Luther King, Jr. Day." Instead, they had different ideas.
