Dick Vermeil is beloved in Philadelphia. As the coach who turned the Philadelphia Eagles into a playoff contender and beat the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship in 1980, Vermeil will always have a place in the hearts of Philly sports fans. But what about Andy Reid? The longtime Birds coach may be coaching his last home game Sunday against the Washington Redskins. Reid has suffered through his worst year as coach as the Birds have stumbled and fumbled their way to the finish line this year in a season marred with injuries and inconsistencies. Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Try six by the Philadelphia Eagles, including three on three straight drives in the second half and two on the first two series of the game that led to all 34 points by the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday night. Actually, in five plays the Birds turned it over four times. With the Birds leading the Bengals 13-10 after a second-quarter comeback in which they had trailed 10-0, the wheels came off this roller coaster of a season once again in the second half. Quarterback Nick Foles drives the Philadelphia Eagles to victory with two seconds left over Tampa Bay.
The losing streak eventually had to end. And rookie quarterback Nick Foles did it in grand fashion, throwing a last-second touchdown pass to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 23-21. "Fly Eagles Fly, on the road to victory." We haven't heard that theme song in some time. But the Birds battled all day, sparked by Foles and excellent games from receivers Jason Avant and Jeremy Maclin. After an eight-game losing streak, the Eagles won a game they probably shouldn't have against a playoff-caliber team. While the Bucs shut down rookie running standout Bryce Brown to six yards, Foles found a way to get it done. The Philadelphia Eagles fumble away game to Carolina Panthers to extend their losing streak to seven games.
Fumbles and penalties. It's hard to win football games when your team can't hang on to the ball. And the Philadelphia Eagles did just that, fumbling three times and losing to the Carolina Panthers in front of a national audience on Monday Night Football. The 30-22 loss is the seventh straight for the Eagles, who continued to stumble in turning over the football and making mistakes that killed drives and fueled the Panthers to victory. Philadelphia Eagles lose sixth-straight game to fall to 3-7.
Nick Foles wasn't the savior. The Philadelphia Eagles didn't beat the Washington Redskins to save the season. Instead, two field goals were all the offense the Birds could muster as they fell to the Washington Redskins 31-6 for their sixth-straight loss. Redskins rookie Quarterback Robert Griffin III was dazzling at times running the football, looking like a young Michael Vick in how he avoided sackers and tacklers. And Griffin showed off his cannon of an arm, tossing two long balls among his four touchdown passes. Once again, the Eagles defense continued to slide. Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid is under fire for his team's play this year. Could this be the end of his tenure?
Should he stay or should he go? With the Philadelphia Eagles playing at 3-6 and on a five-game losing streak, is Coach Andy Reid a goner after the season ends? Probably. But maybe not. There's talk that owner Jeff Lurie could call Reid back into action for his 15th year next year, even though the owner stated at the end of last year that the team needed significant progress and improvement from its 8-8 record last year. After all, Reid went into the season facing the death of his son Garrett during the preseason at training camp at Lehigh University. Also, Reid has one final year remaining on his contract, so Lurie could cut the coach some slack and let him play out his hand. That, of course, would come at the expense of the fans, who are …

In a must game, the Philadelphia Eagles get sacked by the New Orleans Saints.
This was a must game. With the New York Giants losing Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles had the opportunity to close the gap. By beating the New Orleans Saints Monday night, the Birds could have climbed back in the NFC East race, a game behind the G-Men in the loss column. Could have. Should have. In an up-an-down game, the Eagles showed some bright spots, but also enough mishaps to fall to the Saints 28-13. You can't really blame Quarterback Michael Vick for this one. Vick once again got little offensive line protection and the defense sagged for most of the first half before rallying to produce a turnover and some key plays. For many Philadelphia Eagles fans, this season already seems like one of lost hope. The Birds stand at 3-4 and face the New Orleans Saints in prime time action on "Monday Night Football." After last week's disaster against the Atlanta Falcons, Coach Andy Reid needs to right this ship -- which is quickly taking water -- and fast. Another loss could mean the season is hopeless. But a win to get back to .500 would mean a great deal in this tough NFC. No one imagined that the Birds would be so bad. After all those years as a playoff contender, being 8-8 last year and 3-4 at this point is pretty pathetic. And the fan base is losing faith. Who really are these Eagles? The Birds come out of a bye getting blown away by undefeated Atlanta Falcons.
The only birds to show up at Lincoln Financial Field Sunday were the Boo Birds. After firing their defensive coordinator and promising to fix things, Coach Andy Reid ill-prepared his team as the Philadelphia Eagles were outplayed out of the gate by the undefeated Atlanta Falcons. Boo Birds. They took flight mainly in the third quarter, calling out "Fire Andy" as the Birds fell to the Falcons 30-17. They came out flat and fell flat. The defense, under new coordinator Todd Bowles, played the same way: too many missed tackles and bad penalties and few stops on third down.
