The season's final unsung hero will continue her career at Lock Haven University.
The Spring-Ford High School girls lacrosse program said goodbye to an integral part of its core at the conclusion of the 2012 season: Goalie Cassidy Novotny. Novotny graduated this year and will be continuing her career at Lock Haven University. Head coach Amy Short believed Novotny was a key part of the team and wanted to award an unsung hero nomination to her. "Cass has been the varsity goalie for three years," said Short. "You don't really hear a whole lot about goalies. You hear about someone who scored or how many goals somebody put in. Usually at the end, it's the goalie has 11 saves in goal. You don't really realize what that specifically means. I think it's so important to get her the recognition for basically every single game …

Softball has played its final game of the season in 2012.
The Spring-Ford High School softball team was the sole survivor in the postseason of all of the spring sports. After Thursday's game against Hatboro-Horsham, they too have fallen. "We didn't get enough hitting going on," said head coach Tim Hughes. "But you know what? We went out there and it's an old saying, I hate to lose more than I love to win. The kids tried hard and Hatboro-Horsham is a good team. A few mistakes here and there and you can't do that with them. They capitalized." The Hatters put a 8-1 performance together at North Penn High School in order to capture the fifth and final spot for the state tournament. How did they do it? Knocking the ball out of the park... Count 'em... not one, not two, but three times - the third was …
Spring-Ford High School championship teams and individuals were recognized at a recent board meeting.
The Spring-Ford Area School District honored high school athletes for championship performances during the spring season at its regular board of education meeting on Tuesday night. First of all, we're really excited about the whole year and not just athletically, but how well these kids are socially, academically," said Athletic Director Mickey McDaniel. "We have tremendous student-athletes. The spring has been an awesome one. We won two team championships and yet we had three other teams vying for championships in championship games. Now we have softball playing Thursday for the state title." The board recognized the teams with the following resolutions: "Every one of these young men and women have made us proud," McDaniel continued. "I …

This week's unsung hero is on the defensive side of the sticks and personifies toughness.
Potential leads one to believe that the Spring-Ford girls lacrosse team could do big things in 2012-13. Coming back with most of the girls, the Rams have aspirations of a PAC-10 title and getting past the first round of districts. One of the key players on next year's squad will have to be Erin Mensch. Mensch earned First Team All PAC-10 honors her sophomore year with the team as well as this year. She's the undisputed leader of the defense. "Erin lead the defense through her communication skills," said head coach Amy Short. "She is strong and confident both on and off the field. She takes charges and often gets pretty beat up out there." Mensch was happy to receive honors from her coach, who has inspired her career. She agreed that she is…

The Rams scored zero runs in their round three district tournament softball game against Central Bucks South.
It's been an ongoing postseason theme for the Spring-Ford softball team. Low-scoring offense. Tough defense. Unfortunately for Spring-Ford, only one-half of that trend showed up on Friday against Central Bucks South. The girls lost to the Titans in round three of the district playoffs, 8-0. "I can't explain it," said head coach Tim Hughes. "One of those things in 20 years of coaching I can't explain. I can't say they weren't ready to play. They were excited and they were there." The Rams only had two hits in the game, and mental mistakes came early. In the first inning, a run scored on an RBI-single, which was preceded by a base-hit on an error at first base. That runner advanced to second on a wild pitch, and was driven home by the RBI. "…
This week, our Q&A is with Jean Yeakle, who specialized in discus during her Spring-Ford High School track & field career. She took some time to chat with us about her career.
Jen Yeakle just concluded her Spring-Ford track & field career. The senior specialized in throwing throughout her three years with the program, and was mainly tossing the discus. However, Yeakle was a mutli-talented athlete, throwing the shot put and javelin at times, as well. Yeakle's throwing coach Jeff Mast praised her work over the years. "Jen is dedicated, works hard, and is a powerful young lady," Mast said. "Her biggest obstacle was being able to look up when you throw. All the throws, you want to be chest up, look up. Her tendency was always to go down. That's the difference in this year and other years. She's starting to look up, her technique is a little better and her distances are better." Yeakle is not the only thrower on the …

Spring-Ford softball defeated West Chester East, 1-0 on Thursday to advance to the third round of the district tournament.
After a tragic loss in the Final Four semifinals for the PAC-10 to the eventual champs, Perkiomen Valley, the Spring-Ford girls were ready to step back onto the diamond and show the community and the district that they could go far. The girls weren't able to put up many runs against PV, which led to the loss. They came out on Thursday and did the exact same thing, but played good enough defense to hold off West Chester East, 1-0 in round two of the district tournament. "The kids were resilient," said head coach Tim Hughes. "They played good D when they had to and made the plays they’re supposed to make. That’s all I can ask for." The Rams scored their sole run early. In the bottom of the first, leadoff hitter Cassie Alexy got on base with …

Central Bucks South defeated Spring-Ford 10-4 to knock the Rams out of the district tournament.
The following clip comes from Dave Kurtz of PAC-10Sports.com: ROYERSFORD – The lightning in the sky was nothing compared to the electrical storm generated by the Central Bucks South bats Wednesday. Living up their nickname, the Titans struck early and often, pounding out 10 hits – including a pair of home runs that produced five runs – in a 10-4 flogging of Spring-Ford in the second round of the District One Class AAAA baseball tournament at Rams Stadium. CB South was in launch mode from the start, pushing across five runs in the top of the first inning – highlighted by Kyle Lewis’ RBI-double and Will Sasser’s two-run bolt to deep left – both with two outs. The Rams clawed back within 7-4 when lightning was spotted on the horizon in the …
