PJPII Does it Again with the Rhapsodies' "The Magic of Music"

Kelly Thunstrom, local book and theater reviewer, attended opening night of Pope John Paul II High School's "The Magic of Music."

I had the pleasure of attending opening night of Pope John Paul II High School's "The Magic of Music." This is the third musical-type performance I've attended there, and may I dare say that the arts program is almost second to none. Featuring over 70 students in the cast and crew, directed by Mrs. Marusia Griffin Lynn and musical director Mrs. Eleanor Griffin, and helped by a whole team of assistants and parents, "The Magic of Music" is an awesome effort. Rehearsals have been ongoing since late summer, so you know you'll be in for a treat. The performers, otherwise known as The Rhapsodies,  do not just stand around and sing the whole time; there is choreography for almost every song (also done by Mrs. Lynn), with constant rotations around…

Spring-Ford Choirs Bring Joy to Community

Kelly Thunstrom, local arts reviewer, attended the 2011 Winter Choral Concert at Spring-Ford High School.

The Twelve Days of Christmas has nothing on the Spring-Ford High School choirs. Instead of 10 lords-a-leaping and nine ladies dancing, try 120 members of the concert choir, 15 members of the men’s choir, 36 select members of the vocal ensemble, three members of The Nick Perri Trio, 15 members of vocal jazz, 35 members of the women’s choir, and two very funny emcees. This all made for one very impressive night of music at the 2011 Winter Choral Concert, held on Dec. 16. Under the direction of Yvonne O’Dea, the concert choir began and ended the evening. Their rendition of the holiday classic, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, mashed the 120 voices beautifully. David Nicol, the previous choral director, returned to direct the men’s …

"The Crucible" at Spring-Ford High School - A Review

Kelly Thunstrom, local arts reviewer, attended Spring-Ford High School's production of "The Crucible" on Saturday night.

I am sure that many of us remember reading Arthur Miller’s The Crucible in high school. To me, I can only fully realize the full effect of a play when it is performed, whether it is by Miller or Shakespeare. The Crucible, a Tony-Award winner in 1953, is always so relevant so matter what year it is performed. It was written during Joseph McCarthy’s House Un-American Activities Committee Hearings, for which Miller was called to testify. In a nutshell, it is about gossip and how people turn on each other in a heartbeat. It is almost always considered one of Miller’s two best plays, along with Death of a Salesman. Directed by Aimee Oblak, with assistance by Ron Logan and student direction by Nicholas Edwards, The Crucible was performed by the …

Reviews Are News! With a Local Spin

Limerick-Royersford-Spring City Patch introduces its new reviewer of the local arts, Kelly Thunstrom.

Hi! My name is Kelly Thunstrom, and I am thrilled to write for Patch. I will be keeping you up-to-date on the local arts scene, reviewing books, theater productions and movies that have a local connection. But first, let me tell you a little about my background. I grew up in Mountaintop, Pa., which is near the Poconos. From the age of 10 through high school, I was a ballet, tap and jazz dancer with a wonderful dance company in Luzerne County. I was also heavily involved in the arts in high school, especially with theater productions and choral groups. I graduated from Kutztown University with a degree in Elementary Education, also becoming certified in Mid-Level Social Studies and Secondary English. After college, I moved to Pottstown and …
