Spring-Ford students told Fox 29 that teens here are already using the designer drug to get high.
A student from the Spring-Ford Area School District overdosed on May 8 on the drug methoxetamine, or MXE, according to Limerick Township Police. MXE, or methoxetamine, is a synthetic drug used as a research chemical. Its effects are similar to ketamine, a powerful animal anesthetic. It's packaged like a supplement or protein powder and is purchasable online. While it's legal in the United States, it has been banned in other countries, according to Fox 29 News. "If that one girl has it in our high school, there's others that have it," Detective Matt Daywalt, of the Limerick Township Police Department, said. Spring-Ford school district officials said Wednesday the rumor of a plot to carry out some kind of attack at Spring-Ford Area High School was "groundless," following an investigation by police and district staff. A district spokesperson said Dr. David Goodin and administrators, along with Upper Providence Township police, had been at the 9th Grade Center and the 10th-12th Grade Center on Wednesday to investigate the rumor. The district acknowledged the rumor has been spreading and told Patch the district takes all such rumors very seriously. Spring-Ford held its 2013 Festival of the Arts on Friday night at the high school, showing off work from all levels of art classes. Five seniors were chosen as spotlight students: Taylor Bielecki, Megan Harbison, Phoebe Mikalonis, Tia Rohrer and Catherine Walsh. Four students were also chosen to spotlight their jewelry work: Emily Hefelfinger, Haley McGuigan, Rachel Miller, and Emily Ward. Royersford Borough plans to erect two signs labeling Royersford as the home of the Lady Rams, the 2013 PIAA AAAA Basketball State Champions. Spring-Ford athletic director Mickey McDaniel and seniors Sarah Payonk, Sammi Haas and Kirsten Landis were on hand to accept a plaque from borough council and to see the new signs. Mayor John Guest presented Payonk, Haas and Landis with a plaque commemorating their season. McDaniel said many of the team members were either at SAT preparation class or at practice for other sports and weren't able to attend. The girls basketball team got another round of accolades, this time from their parents, friends, teachers, coaches and members of the community.
A community dinner and celebration took place at the Spring-Ford Area High School gym last night to once again honor the amazing season that the girls basketball team just completed. Principal Pat Nugent emceed the evening, and there were speeches from school board president Tom DiBello, athletic director Mickey McDaniel, coach Jeff Rinehimer and cheerleading coach Kaycee Wilkie. The team got a chance to show off all their trophies and commendations. Each member was awarded a plaque and a certificate. Girls on the varsity team were awarded their letters. Spring-Ford and Pope John Paul II's track teams are on the schedule for the 2013 Penn Relays which began Thursday. Pope John Paul II High School According to the Penn Relays website, the Pope John Paul II girls team has already competed on Thursday in the High School Girls 4x100 Small Schools division. The PJPII team ran a 52.97 race and placed 157th out of 357 teams. PJP's ranking and the top spot, a team from Jamaica who set the race record at 45.52, are separated by only 7 seconds. In Thursday afternoon competition in the Girls 4x400 race, PJP placed seventh with a time of 4:18.45. The Spring-Ford Area High School girls basketball team added another award to their growing collection as they were named a member of the MaxPreps Tour of Champions. The state-champion team is ranked 27th in the nation, according to MaxPreps, a CBS Sports website that ranks high school teams. They are one of only 18 teams named to the Tour of Champions. More than 20,000 high schools have girls basketball teams, and MaxPreps uses their own ranking system, the Freeman Rankings, to rank them all. The Freeman Rankings take into account not only wins, but quality wins (wins against other ranked teams), strength of schedule and margin of victory. The Spring-Ford High School Theater has been working on 'Little Shop of Horrors' for months, and the show is set to finally premiere on Friday night with a second show on Saturday. Patch attended the open dress rehearsal on Thursday and took these photos of the performance. The cast was fantastic together. Spring-Ford definitely has some incredibly talented voices in the theater program. Senior Drew Carr and freshman Kailey Edwards were great as nerdy Seymour and fragile Audrey, Mario Dolenti was a wonderfully grumpy Mr. Mushnick and Anthony Barbine had dentist Oren Scrivello's insane giggle down pat.
