Parents Warned to Watch for New Drug MXE

Spring-Ford students told Fox 29 that teens here are already using the designer drug to get high.

A student from the Spring-Ford Area School District overdosed on May 8 on the drug methoxetamine, or MXE, according to Limerick Township Police. MXE, or methoxetamine, is a synthetic drug used as a research chemical. Its effects are similar to ketamine, a powerful animal anesthetic. It's packaged like a supplement or protein powder and is purchasable online. While it's legal in the United States, it has been banned in other countries, according to Fox 29 News. "If that one girl has it in our high school, there's others that have it," Detective Matt Daywalt, of the Limerick Township Police Department, said. "It's rarer than like marijuana," SFHS Senior Ronnie Chrisman said. Chrisman told a Fox 29 reporter that students know it as ATM, MXE, …

'Shooting Plot' Rumor Baseless, District Says

Police visited two Spring-Ford schools to investigate on Wednesday.

Spring-Ford school district officials said Wednesday the rumor of a plot to carry out some kind of attack at Spring-Ford Area High School was "groundless," following an investigation by police and district staff. A district spokesperson said Dr. David Goodin and administrators, along with Upper Providence Township police, had been at the 9th Grade Center and the 10th-12th Grade Center on Wednesday to investigate the rumor.  The district acknowledged the rumor has been spreading and told Patch the district takes all such rumors very seriously.  Several readers contacted Patch to say that their children had heard the story as it spread.  "Social media helps to spread rumors faster," the spokeperson said. "We're not sure why it's circulating…

Spring-Ford Students Confessing Fears, Crushes on Facebook Page

Almost two months after its creation, the page has more than 1,000 posts.

Most teenagers would probably agree that they would like to be able to talk about their day-to-day issues, whether it concerns someone they have a crush on, an issue at school or a problem at home. With the advent of the internet, those sorts of worries, fears and even day-to-day triumphs are often brought out much more publicly than in the past. Even schoolyard taunting has taken on new shapes. Where insults or derogatory comments used to be passed in notes or written on bathroom walls (or, in this writer's middle school life, written in "slam books" that would get passed around until they showed up on the subject's desk one day), now they go up on Facebook or Twitter for everyone to see.  A Facebook page recently popped up where Spring-…

'Little Shop of Horrors' Comes to Life on the Spring-Ford Stage

The dark comedy musical will run two nights, Friday and Saturday

The Spring-Ford High School Theater has been working on 'Little Shop of Horrors' for months, and the show is set to finally premiere on Friday night with a second show on Saturday.  Patch attended the open dress rehearsal on Thursday and took these photos of the performance.  The cast was fantastic together. Spring-Ford definitely has some incredibly talented voices in the theater program. Senior Drew Carr and freshman Kailey Edwards were great as nerdy Seymour and fragile Audrey, Mario Dolenti was a wonderfully grumpy Mr. Mushnick and Anthony Barbine had dentist Oren Scrivello's insane giggle down pat.  Barbine also stars as the voice of the mutant plant, Audrey II, which is itself played by a series of puppets.  If you're familiar with …
