Squibb Upset in Second Straight Wing Bowl Defeat

Connecticut's James "The Bear" McDonald pulls out a narrow victory over the three-time champ.

Philadelphia's championship drought has spread to yet another sport: New Englander James "The Bear" McDonald pulled off an upset victory in Wing Bowl 21, edging three-time champ Jonathan “Super” Squibb to take the title. One of five out-of-town ringers brought in to challenge Squibb, McDonald lived up to his bidding as the 2012 All Pro Eating Rookie of the Year and fulfilled his prediction he would out-eat Squibb for the title. “This wasn’t necessarily as intimidating as I thought, but the final result was a lot closer than I thought it would be,” McDonald said amid a rain of boos from a drunkenly partisan crowd. “I had to really push it.” McDonald built a slim lead heading into the finals and held off Squibb and Dave “U.S. Male” Goldstein…

GALLERY: Wing Bowl 20 and Interviews

A photo gallery and some words from our local participants.

Rick The Manager Russo, Notorious B.O.B. Bob Shoudt and Rick's wife Sherri were among those in our own community who attended Wing Bowl. But, one of the things Russo wanted to stress is that he brings many of his best friends to share the excitement. The following people were listed in Rick's entourage: Frank Pastella ("Float Construction Manager"), Jaci Miley, Scott Miley, Jason Mullen, Shawn Leightcap, Pat Joseph, Mike Hunsberger, Jeff Groves, Mark Kopp and Mary Gamler. Check out the above gallery from WIP's Wing Bowl 20 that was held on Friday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Also, here are some quotes from Rick and Sherri about their experience: Sherri Russo's Thoughts on Wing Bowl 20 I've participated with Rick in the past …

Patch to Attend Wing Bowl 20

Royersford's own Rick "The Manager" Russo (Mr. Patch 2011) will be partaking in his fourth consecutive Wing Bowl. Patch Editor Kevin Haslam joins Russo to cover his performance.

Just a few days ago, we named Rick "The Manager" Russo, Royersford resident and competitive eater, Mr. Patch 2011. The award came to Russo after he won the polls that occurred in December through early January. In light of Russo competing in his fourth consecutive WIP Wing Bowl, which is an annual buffalo wing eating contest held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, yours truly will be tagging along to cover all things Rick The Manager! Russo invited me to be in his "entourage" - the group that hangs with each eater for the entire event. I'll be there, sporting my Patch hat and a Rick The Manager t-shirt, documenting each step Russo takes toward potential victory (although WIP morning show host Angelo Cataldi said Russo has no shot …

I am sickened that this event not only continues but also that it gets media attention. Do you know how many hungry families could be fed by the money spent on this event. Talked about screwed up priorities!   more ›
