The Week in Review

Missed some news this week? Here's your weekly recap.

Within the span of one week, not only does the east coast see an earthquake, but it's set to see a potentially dangerous hurricane by the weekend. In light of that, our coverage was certainly centered on that, but there was another huge piece of news that snuck on in there... The Royersford-Spring City Bridge reopened on Friday. Aside from that, the school board met for a regular meeting and approved Allyn Roche as the new assistant superintendent and plans to discuss some policies on facilities usage and dress code. Did you miss anything last week? Here are some links to the stories that made the week that was:

Bridge to Reopen Tomorrow

The Royersford-Spring City Bridge is set to reopen on Friday.

PennDOT announced in a press release on Thursday afternoon that the Royersford-Spring City bridge will reopen on Friday. According to the release, pedestrian and vehicle traffic will be permitted to use the bridge, once again. "Due to the bridge’s importance to the local communities, we committed to reopening the bridge as quickly as possible," said PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso. "Our contractor worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week to build the new bridge deck that will provide travelers with uninterrupted service for at least the next 25 years." The bridge was closed to the public starting on July 18. Estimates called for an eight week closure, but it was done in a little less than six. Construction will continue, …

Q&A with PennDOT: Bridge Almost Complete

PennDOT goes one on one with Patch concerning the Royersford-Spring City bridge.

It has been just over 5 weeks since the Royersford-Spring City bridge closed for repairs. The announcement came as a shock to some and a disappointment to even more, but many agreed that it had to be done. Regardless, PennDOT has always made it a goal to exceed the eight week estimate and finish before school started. We had a chance to catch up with Gene Blaum, assistant press secretary for PennDOT, to get the full story. LRSC Patch: Is there a scheduled date that this bridge work is anticipated to be completed? If so, what is it? Gene Blaum: The Department plans to reopen the bridge on the earliest possible date, possibly as soon as the end of this week. That will depend on several factors as the contractor now is finishing the concrete …

The Week in Review

Missed some news this week? Here's your weekly recap.

Three words loom in everyone's mind as summer vacations begin to come to a close, the rain begins to pour, indicating the soon arrival of the changing colors of the leaves, and sports practices begin: Back to School. The SFASD board of education met for the first time since June to kick off the 2011-2012 school year and new superintendent Dr. David Goodin was officially introduced. The board is also awaiting approval for the new assistant superintendent, who was announced this week in a press release. Spring City borough council's Mike Hays chimed in on the bridge closure and Limerick Township is planning development projects that have the residents buzzing about the potential dangers to their homes. SFASD: Students, Administration Getting Ready to Go Back to School, Goodin Officially Welcomed

The board of education met for the first time in over a month and is getting ready for back to school festivities.

The Spring-Ford Area School District board of education met for its regular workshop meeting on Monday night and discussed some back to school issues, along with transportation preparation and the official arrival of new superintendent Dr. David Goodin. Transportation Coordinator Lora Sanderson gave a presentation on busing and transportation vehicles, revealing the budget to be $7,381,811 for 2011-2012. She did note that the budget reflects 12 months and not nine. "It’s not just from September through June," Sanderson said. "It continues through the summer for special education programs, ESY programs for about six weeks. So we have to transport all the students and that puts a factor into [the budget] as well." Sanderson also said she …

Q&A With the Businesses - Kathi Thim of Kathi's Barber Shop

Our series continues with a very different outlook on the closure. Here's your chance to sit down with a business and hear what it has to say.

Since the bridge closure on July 18, many businesses have spoken out, screaming to the public "We're open! Come on in!" However, inconvenience doesn't even describe the trek from Royersford to Spring City, and vice versa, without the 80-plus year-old bridge. Still, businesses are doing the best they can over the supposed eight-week span of the closure. In week two, Patch decided it was time to sit down and talk to the businesses one on one. Olde Knitting Mill Antiques and Open Door Ministry both discussed their dissatisfaction with the closure; however, this week's guest has a different take on the closure. Limerick-Royersford-Spring City Patch had a chance to speak with Kathi Thim of Kathi's Barber Shop, which has been in the area for the…

Missed some news this week? Here's your weekly recap.

This week was a little on the slower side as it comes to breaking stories, but the District Attorney was able to get a confession from an 18-year-old man for the Kiwi and Dominos robberies. A drought watch was also announced on Monday and Verizon employees continued their strike. In Royersford, the borough notified residents through its borough council meeting that the bridge construction is on schedule and local business owners are gaining momentum on a Royersford Community Day, slated for Sept. 10. Here are our top 12 stories from the week in case you missed them:

Royersford-Spring City Bridge Repairs On Schedule

In other news, the borough will honor 9/11 victims with flags.

During the Royersford Borough Council’s first August meeting Tuesday night, borough manager Michael Leonard said the repairs to the Royersford-Spring City bridge are "on or ahead of schedule." The comment came in response to a question from resident Hannelore Bealor, the owner of the Royersford Hotel. Bealor asked if the bridge crews were working 24 hours a day as they had promised when the project began. "I know they poured concrete recently," Leonard said, speculating that crews might not be there because they are waiting for the concrete to set. Another resident said the middle section of the bridge is covered with burlap, which indicates that there might be concrete curing underneath and that he has seen the crews laying rebar recently…

A1- I agree 100% that we need leaders for the people in spring city. Without making this article totally political- there has been a downslide of support to the businesses in spring city for months. An example being the "Officer Lewis" situation. I can only speak as a business owner when he was here, we felt safe. There was less vandalism to our businesses and no loitering of teens in our neck of…   more ›

The work on the bridge to repair it properly is WAY overdue. That being said, I am saddened that the boroughs and businesses impacted were not given more notice of the closing. I do volunteer work at the Open Door, and am also a part-time paid employee. I have to travel 6 miles out of my way just to get to and from the shop. WE have people coming in from other areas that have NO awareness of the …   more ›
