Students learned ways to protect their brains from injury.
This press release was sent by Spring-Ford Area School District. Evans Elementary School students learn every day how to exercise their brains, but on March 13, the students learned how to protect their brains through a safety program called “BrainMinders.” Presented by Pilot International Foundation, a worldwide service organization, “BrainMinders” is designed to help prevent brain injuries. Presenters Trudy Houck and Phyllis Snyder visited kindergarten classes to teach students about their brains and how they work. They also taught students the importance of various safety measures, such as wearing helmets, sitting in car and booster seats, wearing seatbelts, playing safely on playgrounds and looking both ways before crossing the street…
School staff works together to teach youth about fitness, staying in shape.
Students at Evans Elementary School in the Spring-Ford School District are enjoying a new program called "Club 15." School staff, including physical education teachers and nurses show students how they can exercise for just 15 minutes a day and stay in good health. The National Board Certified Teacher designation is a very difficult credential to obtain.
Two Evans Elementary educators have recently earned the highest credential available to American educators by recently becoming National Board Certified Teachers through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). Second-grade teacher Susan Mercer and third-grade educator Arlene Reagan join only 1,043 other Pennsylvania teachers who have achieved this distinction. Mercer and Reagan received the impressive designation from the NBPTS after completing a series of projects and assessments over the course of several months. Those projects included 10 assessments, four portfolio entries and six response exercises that were designed to test Mercer and Reagan’s instructional abilities and aptitude. Students participated in a healthy eating program at school last week.

The importance of eating five servings of fruits and vegetables daily was the lesson imparted on students through a program titled “There’s a Rainbow on My Plate,” which was held Sept. 27 and 28 at Evans Elementary School. Sponsored by the Main Line Health Community Services Department, the program was presented to the school’s second-graders to teach them the importance of eating a variety of different colored fruits and vegetables. Monthlong fundraiser created to collect $12K for dictionaries and thesauruses for Evans Elementary Students
The following release was submitted by Phil Ellingsworth Jr., representing the Spring-Ford Area School District: LIMERICK — The gift of knowledge is one of the most important presents that someone can bestow upon a child, which is why Evans Elementary School educators are asking for the community’s assistance to help raise $12,000 for new dictionaries and thesauruses for the building’s second- through fourth-grade classrooms. The monthlong fundraiser — which continues until May 5 — was created to help purchase 400 sets of Webster’s New World Children’s Dictionaries and The American Heritage Children’s Thesauruses for the approximately 125 students in each grade. Evans Elementary students collect food for Project Outreach to help community members in need.
The following release was submitted by Phil Ellingsworth Jr., representing the Spring-Ford Area School District: LIMERICK — Combating hunger and ensuring that everyone in the community has something to eat is the purpose of Evans Elementary School’s fourth annual food drive, which has students collect various food items throughout the month to be donated to Royersford-based Project Outreach. The annual event encourages the school’s 600 students to bring in non-perishable food items that will be used to help others in time for the upcoming spring holidays. The goal is to fill approximately 30 to 40 copy paper-sized boxes with the items, so they can be distributed to Project Outreach for individuals and families who need food assistance. …

Dentist teaches Evans Elementary fourth-graders the importance of brushing and flossing during Feb. 15 Dental Health Month presentation.
The following was sent in by Phil Ellingsworth Jr., representing the Spring-Ford Area School District: LIMERICK — Evans Elementary School fourth-graders learned the importance of good oral health after a local dentist gave a presentation during a Dental Health Month event on Feb. 15. Collegeville dentist Dr. Adam Weiss taught students simple tips to achieve and maintain good dental hygiene, such as brushing and flossing their teeth, and visiting the dentist regularly. Dr. Weiss also explained the dangers of chewing tobacco and the harm it can have on the mouth. Evans Elementary School students stride toward good health as members of walking club log more than 1,200 miles and 3 million steps this fall.
The following was submitted by Phil Ellingsworth Jr., representing the Spring-Ford Area School District: LIMERICK — Evans Elementary School third- and fourth-graders walked more than 1,200 miles together as part of the Evans Health Choices After-School Walking Club this fall. This fall, 67 students and four teachers walked two days a week for eight weeks taking 3,045,186 steps, totaling 1,218 miles. The walking club began in 2007 as a way to get children exercising and help them meet new friends. Students who are part of the club wear pedometers and walk rain or shine – outside in a loop around school grounds if it is nice out, and inside the gym if it is raining. Evans Elementary School students get on board with bus safety lessons
The following was sent in by Jessica Lester, representing the Spring-Ford Area School District: LIMERICK - As part of Bus Safety Week, Evans Elementary School kindergartners and first-graders received a visit from the Montgomery County Health Department representatives who taught the children the safest ways to board and ride a school bus. On Oct. 17, 18 and 20, county Health Department officials Katie Kucz and Kelsey Stenger reminded Evans students about rules for getting on and off the bus safely, proper bus riding etiquette, how to cross the street when getting on or off a bus, and how to behave at the bus stop. LIMERICK - Evans Elementary School has been awarded a $2,000 grant from Target to support its Evans R.E.A.D.S (Reading, Exploring and Discovering Stories) program, a literacy effort designed to encourage all children to read at school and at home with their families. Evans R.E.A.D.S. is a school-wide initiative that engages every student in grades K-4 through the reading of the same book. Each Evans teacher, over a specific period of time during the school year, will read the same book to his or her classroom.
