Update: Arguments To Expand On Nuke Plant License Hearing

Parties involved in the challenge of Exelon Nuclear's license renewal will get a chance to expand on their complaints before a panel decides whether a hearing is needed.

Update 12-19-11:  Neil Sheehan, NRC Public Affairs, on Monday said the Natural Resources Defense Council and the National Legal Scholars Law Firm, P.C. will challenge Exelon Corporation's Limerick nuclear generating station's license extension.  The NRDC last month filed a petition saying Exelon didn't conduct a legally adequate environmental analysis. A three-judge Atomic Safety and Licensing Board panel will review requests for a hearing on the plant’s renewal application, Sheehan said via email. The panel must first determine whether the NRDC has standing and merits further review.  “There is no hard and fast deadline for doing so," Sheehan said. "It will give all of the parties involved -- NRDC, Exelon and NRC staff -- an opportunity…

Limerick Generating Station Confident in Emergency Preparedness Plan

Despite recent studies done by the Associated Press, Joe Szafran of the Limerick Generating Station is confident in the current emergency preparedness plan.

It was recently reported back in July by ABC World News that nuclear evacuation plans cannot handle growing population after a comprehensive report done by the Associated Press. With a nuclear power plant in the Limerick Generating Station right in many of the proverbial back yards of Limerick, Royersford and Spring City residents, concerns were raised over the story and some of the talking points made in it. The 2010 United States Census report showed a grand total of 26,149 residents in the three municipalities. In 1980, the total was 12,930, according to the census, meaning a little over 100-percent growth in the past 30 years in the area - with most of that growth occurring in Limerick Township. In comparison, the Ft. Calhoun nuclear …

Siren Tests To Occur on Monday

The Limerick Generating Station is performing a routine test of the new siren system on Aug. 1.

The Limerick Generating Station will be running a two-siren test on Aug. 1 as a part of its new siren system. The testing will begin around 2 p.m. and end by 2:30 p.m. The tone could be three minutes long during both tests.  "This siren activation will help the company test the new system that features battery back-up for the sirens prior to its official implementation later this year," the Thursday release stated. The test runs the first Monday of each month. "The warning sirens are one of several methods used by county emergency management authorities to provide notification of emergencies," the release said. "Individual counties may activate the sirens to warn the surrounding community of events such as fires, floods, tornadoes, …

Nuclear power plant opens its doors to public

About 400 residents attend Exelon Nuclear's "Community Information Night"

Exelon opened up the Limerick Generating Station’s learning center for a community open house on Wednesday night. Exelon employees spent the evening greeting area residents and answering questions, with the recent shutdowns at the plant a popular topic. Employees were stationed at tables set up around the room, representing the different departments at the plant. Attendees visited displays on plant operations and training, plant safety, industrial safety, emergency preparedness, nuclear careers, equipment upgrades and plant security. Gene DiPaolo and Nicole Sieller, the plant’s resident inspectors, were at the event representing the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. There were also representatives from PA Energy Alliance, a grassroots …

Another "Scram" at Limerick Nuclear Plant

Unit 1 shut down unexpectedly at about 10:15am today. The cause is under investigation. Unit 2 shut down due to a faulty turbine valve earlier this week.

For the second time this week, one of the two reactors at the Limerick Generating Station has experienced an unscheduled shutdown. Unit 1 experienced an automatic "scram" at about 10:15am, according to Neil Sheehan, a spokesperson for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). "There were no complications during the shutdown, safety systems responded as expected, and the cooldown of the reactor is proceeding safely," Sheehan said via e-mail. "Workers were performing testing on plant instrumentation when the Unit 1 turbine tripped offline, automatically shutting down the reactor," said April Schilpp, senior manager of communications with Exelon Nuclear. Schilpp and Sheehan both said the precise cause of the shutdown was still under …

NRC Clears Limerick Power Plant Waste Shipments

"Low level" radioactive waste will be transported from Limerick to another nuclear power plant in York County.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved a request by Exelon Nuclear to begin transporting "low level" radioactive waste from the Limerick Generating Station to the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station in York County, the company confirmed this afternoon. Exelon owns both power plants. The "low level" radioactive waste materials consist mostly of rags, tools, disposable scrubs and similar materials that have potentially been contaminated with radiation, according to April Schilpp, a spokesperson for Exelon Nuclear. The material will be stored at the Peach Bottom site for an indefinite period of time prior to its disposal. The company previously transported the materials to a site in South Carolina. In 2008, the company that owns …

Exelon: "Still Working" on Nuke Plant Unit 2 [UPDATED]

One of the power plant's two reactors unexpectedly shut down early Sunday morning.

A representative for Exelon Nuclear today said there were "no updates" on the situation at the company's Limerick Generating Station, where one of two nuclear reactors at the facility, Unit 2, unexpectedly shut down early Sunday morning after what the company called "scheduled testing and maintenance on an electrical system in the non-nuclear side of the plant." Personnel at the plant were "still working the plan to return the unit to service," said April Schilpp, senior manager of communications with Exelon Nuclear. Neil Sheehan, a spokesperson for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), provided additional details on the shutdown, or "unplanned scram," as it's known in nuclear energy parlance. "There was leakage taking place at the time…

Excellent point. Power plant parlance or not...You should inform people in the area what has taken place. Unacceptable.   more ›
