Spring-Ford Area School District met for a regular meeting, where a heated discussion ensued about finances and the cafeteria.
Coordinator of Food Services Paula Germinario gave a presentation at Monday night's Spring-Ford Area School District board of education meeting. The presentation revealed the vision statement of the cafeterias and some information regarding day-to-day operations. According to Germinario, there are a total of 27 full-time employees and 42 part-time employees at Spring-Ford's 12 schools. She also noted lunch prices at the schools as $2.65 at the elementary schools and $2.85 at the middle schools and upper-level centers. Overall, the cafeteria staff issued more than 700,000 meals in 2010-11. However, Germinario said her staff must deal with the difficulty of menu planning within the budget. "By law, federal school lunches must provide one-…

Spring-Ford's board of education is looking to move quickly on policy legislation for student-use of electronic devices.
Superintendent David Goodin and board president Joseph Ciresi made an important announcement at Monday night's Spring-Ford Area School District board of education meeting. "We are currently trying to build the framework to utilize technology in the district to a higher degree," Goodin said, speaking of the allowed (controlled) usage of technological devices by students during the school day. Ciresi told the public that this is an important policy, which is often talked about. Ciresi is under the belief that students are "surpassing us in technology." Not allowing the usage of technology, such as computers or e-readers, is making Spring-Ford students fall behind the curve, according to Ciresi. Ciresi and Tom DiBello both expressed interest …

The school board is recommending some evaluations and possible changes to dress code and use-of-facilities policies in the near future.
The Spring-Ford Area School District board of education met for a regular meeting on Monday night and discussed two potential changes in policy within the district. One of those policies had to do with student dress code, which, according to board member Julie Mullin, was a hot topic that "many are afraid to bring to the table." "I think any parent who has chaperoned a trip lately has been approached about it," Mullin said. "I have had support staff from custodians to cafeteria workers approach me about it. Now that Joe [Ciresi] opened the door, you might be surprised at how many people are willing to discuss." Despite overall enthusiasm for the review, board member Bernard Pettit and vice president Tom DiBello were cautious. DiBello …

The issue has not gone away in the month-long hiatus of summer and the school board is ready to do something about low numbers.
Discussions continued concerning the Western Montgomery Career and Technology Center at Monday night's school board meeting and the board wants to make strides toward taking action with the Joint Operating Committee. Since the last meeting in June, the board has had time to reflect on a few things, including the hiring of the new principal at the Center, Robert Weneck. "While I appreciate board members that are very active with this, I think we have an opportunity with a new principal there," said board member David Shafer. "To me, it would seem that this person would have some attention or some full-time effort aimed at generating something that goes beyond just Spring-Ford and how we are recruiting our students." Members of the board, …

In the last board meeting before the break, Spring-Ford Area School District Board President Joseph Ciresi makes a bold challenge to the district.
After a year of planning and due diligence, the Spring-Ford Area School District was forced to raise taxes by 3.23-percent for the 2011-2012 school year. However, that doesn't mean it already isn't looking toward the future. In the Monday night business meeting held at Spring-Ford High School's cafeteria, board president Joseph Ciresi issued a challenge to the district and the board for next year. "I want to put a challenge out," Ciresi said. "There have been some extremely creative ideas in other districts. Let's cut our budget by 10-percent without cutting staff and without cutting programs, next year." With new superintendent Dr. David Goodin in attendance in his unofficial first meeting with the board, Ciresi issued the challenge in …

How about cutting out 3-choice lunches for the students in 1st thru 4th grades? I am unsure if this would save much $$$ but what I know from home if I am making 3 different dinners, it is costly. Kids have a choice to either buy that day or pack.   more ›
