Q&A with Senior Track Thrower Jen Yeakle

This week, our Q&A is with Jean Yeakle, who specialized in discus during her Spring-Ford High School track & field career. She took some time to chat with us about her career.

Jen Yeakle just concluded her Spring-Ford track & field career. The senior specialized in throwing throughout her three years with the program, and was mainly tossing the discus. However, Yeakle was a mutli-talented athlete, throwing the shot put and javelin at times, as well. Yeakle's throwing coach Jeff Mast praised her work over the years. "Jen is dedicated, works hard, and is a powerful young lady," Mast said. "Her biggest obstacle was being able to look up when you throw. All the throws, you want to be chest up, look up. Her tendency was always to go down. That's the difference in this year and other years. She's starting to look up, her technique is a little better and her distances are better." Yeakle is not the only thrower on the …

SF Board Honors Girls Hoops, Praises Prom

A look back at last week's board of education meeting.

The Spring-Ford Area School District's board of education met for its regular meeting on April 23 and honored the 2011-12 girls basketball team, which won the PAC-10 Championship, the District I Championship and appeared in the semifinals of the PIAA State Tournament. Members of the board and administration, as well as students, also had nice words to say about the April 21 prom and post-prom events. "The girls basketball team had quite a ride this season, setting school records and going further in the state tournament than any basketball team in Spring-Ford High School history," said Superintendent David Goodin. Goodin said the girls were models for success both on and off the court, citing the girls' participation in Limerick days, the …

Girls Basketball Season Recap

Editor Kevin Haslam and girls hoops head coach Jeff Rinehimer discuss the 2011-12 team in detail to wrap up the season.

Spring-Ford High School winter sports are over and one of the biggest and most pleasant surprises and ongoing stories of the season was the girls basketball team. LRSC Patch Editor Kevin Haslam spoke with head coach Jeff Rinehimer to talk about some highs and lows of the season. Here’s how it went: LRSC Patch: What did it mean for the team to make it all the way to Archbishop Carroll and how did you guys feel after all the dust cleared and you guys had some time to think about the loss? Jeff Rinehimer: It was really special. I'm glad they did it. The community support was great. I think the kids kind of fed off that. They saw how many people were coming to the gym every night to see them play. It was a great experience. I'm really proud of…

Archbishop Carroll Stops SF's Road to PSU

The girls basketball team lost in the PIAA State Semifinals game, 65-43 on Tuesday night.

The longest of roads for Spring-Ford girls basketball... A 26-game win streak... A PAC-10 Championship... A District title... A trip to the PIAA State Semifinals... All ended on Tuesday night at the hands of Chuck Creighton's Archbishop Carroll squad. They defeated the Rams 65-43. "They’re upset," head coach Jeff Rinehimer said of his girls. "They wanted more and maybe to put on a better performance. The kids over there [at Archbishop Carroll] have a lot of experience. They turn on the jets, saying ‘This is our night.’ They were tough." The game opened up with a lot of energy. The stands were filled on both sides of the large Norristown High School gym, and both crowds showed support for each team. Carroll's first point was scored on a …

Despite '11 Success, New Year for SF Baseball

A season preview of the 2012 Rams baseball squad featuring head coach Bruce Brobst.

A 25-5 finish (15-3 league record), a district title win... a state championship loss. The Spring-Ford High School baseball team certainly had a lot of fun and proved how much heart it truly had in 2011. Defeating Conestoga in the District Title game, 22-11, aided in giving the Rams enough momentum in the state tournament to put up a big come-from-behind victory over Council Rock South. A Josh Cratsenberg winning run in the CR South game pitted the Rams against Manheim Township in the semifinals. The win over Manheim Township, 6-5, marked Spring-Ford's 12th consecutive win. But, unfortunately, 13 would prove to be the unlucky number for the Rams, dropping the state final to Conestoga in the 10th inning. However, head coach Bruce Brobst …

Girls Do It Again! On to Semifinals

Spring-Ford girls basketball defeated Cheltenham 71-44 on Friday night to advance to the semifinals of the state tournament.

The Spring-Ford High School girls basketball team has done it again. In its latest victory, the team passes through another gateway of opportunity, heading to the semifinals on Tuesday night. The Lady Rams defeated Cheltenham on Friday night at Norristown High School, 71-44. Cheltenham was one of two teams that defeated the girls in this spectacular 2011-12 season. The Panthers gave the Rams its first loss in the very first game of the season. Much of that loss, the girls admit, was at the hands of senior star C.C. Andrews. Head Coach Jeff Rinehimer said the strategy against Andrews on Friday night was simple. "Try your best," Rinehimer chuckled. "That’s what it is. It’s just try your best. You’ve got to eliminate some run-outs and try to …

Girls Hoops Headed to Quarterfinals with Win

Spring-Ford girls basketball defeated Mt. Saint Joseph's Academy on Tuesday night, 38-31

In a low-scoring, highly charged, defensive matchup, the Spring-Ford girls basketball team faced off against Mt. Saint Joseph's Academy on Tuesday night at Norristown High School in the PIAA District One Class AAAA state championship tournament. The girls put on a tough performance and came out on top when the final buzzer sounded, winning the game 38-31. However, it certainly wasn't easy for the Rams. "A lot of tribute to John [Miller]’s team," said head coach Jeff Rinehimer. "They play you tough. We knew watching them on film against Wilson, they’re going to make it tough. If we didn’t adapt to it, a lot of that was them with their toughness. They made every shot that we had to take hand in the face." The girls opened the game back-and-…

Winter Track Season Recap

A look back at the season that was for Spring-Ford High School winter track, featuring head coach Danielle Stauffer.

Record: None Postseason: State Results Major Injuries: "Honestly, Mikayla Francis was a leg on our 4x200, and she had a hip issue that prevented her from competing at the State Championship," said head coach Danielle Stauffer. "I don't know that that really impacted the relays that much from the start. She's usually our starter, so we had to switch around the order a little bit for the girls. She's a really good long jump and triple jumper for us in spring. She's out for about three weeks, so she's allowed to start practicing again in another week and a half from now. That puts her a little bit behind the eight ball. "Other than that kind of injury, we had more issues with sicknesses. Audrey Burger right now is out for at least next week. …

SF Girls Defeat Manheim Twp in Round One

The Spring-Ford girls won, 55-24, in Friday night's State Tournament action.

The PIAA State Tournament for girls basketball is officially underway, and the Spring-Ford Rams have already cleared the first hurdle on the track to glory. The girls defeated Manheim Township High School, 55-24 at Colonial Gym at Plymouth Whitemarsh on Friday night. The beginning of the game definitely provided the Lady Rams with enough momentum and enough of a gap in the score to feel comfortable. The girls led 11-3 about halfway through the first quarter. The Blue Streaks' Alex Leslie scored the team's only five points in the entire first quarter. The quarter ended 23-5 in favor of Spring-Ford. "You just have to try to hustle," said head coach Jeff Rinehimer. "Their shooting percentages aren’t going to be like that all the time. You get…
