Times Herald, Other Local Papers Await Bankruptcy Sale

Journal Register Company, which owns six daily newspapers in the Philadelphia region, filed for bankruptcy in September. The new owner may not retain all the current employees.

The Times Herald of Norristown, the Pottstown Mercury, and the Lansdale Reporter will have a new owner in April, pending a judge's approval of the company's bankruptcy sale. The Associated Press reports that Journal Register Company has sought a judge's approval to be purchased by 21st CMH Acquisition Co., an affiliate of current owner Alden Capital, for about $120 million. 21st CMH Acquisition Co. was the sole bidder in an auction to purchase the Bucks County-based company, which filed for bankruptcy last September. The company had previously filed for bankruptcy in 2009. CEO John Paton cited onerous building leases and other "legacy obligations" as a factor in the most recent bankruptcy filing. Citing an article in the New Haven Register…

SF Board Reacts to GSK Deal Criticism

News from last week's school board meeting.

Some questions came up at the Spring-Ford Area School District board meeting last Monday about the GlaxoSmithKline deal. Patch had to leave the meeting in the midst of the fight and possible stabbing that occurred in Royersford during the meeting and missed this coverage. The following clip comes from a story from Frank Otto of the Pottstown Mercury: “At no time, whatsoever, was there a back door deal made with GSK that the board waited on handling,” said Ciresi. “Not this board. Not that I’m aware of.” Ciresi assured the public that all dealings with GSK were above board. “Everything was done on the up-and-up,” he said. Spring-Ford settled with GlaxoSmithKline on reassessment of property in the district after an appeal. After the district…

NC - A lot of good thoughts in your comment above. There are plenty of citizens who love to complain about public schools and taxes, yet never bother to attend a school board meeting, never talk to a school board member, and have no idea what goes into making up a public school budget. I have all the respect in the world for anybody who serves on a school board - it is, by far, the most thankless…   more ›

Leadership in Review - Q&A with Former Royersford Mayor Dave Urner: Finale

A multi-part series, conversing with former Royersford Mayor Dave Urner about life, the borough and his seven-plus-year term.

Royersford Mayor Dave Urner made a truly difficult decision in September. He announced that he would be stepping down just about a year shy of the expiration of his term for personal reasons. His resignation was effective Sept. 30 and in the meantime, the borough council had to make moves to select an interim. Urner took a few hours of his time to sit down with Limerick-Royersford-Spring City Patch Editor Kevin Haslam and discussed everything from the genesis to his term to the wonderful people he's served in the community. In Part I of our series, Urner discussed his seven-year term, as well as the revitalization efforts of the past, present and future in Royersford. Today, we continue our conversation with the former mayor. In Part II of…
