Council votes to accept bids for some construction work to be done on borough hall.
Royersford Borough Council approved two bids for refurbishment work during Tuesday night's meeting. One bid is to replace the windows along the Third Avenue side of the building. Council first discussed the issue in January and sent requests for proposals out. The borough received several bids, and awarded the contract to G&S Construction, Inc. in the amount of $55,100. The windows will be low-emissive tinted windows that will be more energy-efficient than the current windows. Council also approved a bid by Jones Masonry Restoration to repoint the outside of borough hall. Repointing is a masonry technique that renews the external part of masonry, sealing it against water leakage. The bid for $24,495 will pay to repoint the entire …
Concerns about parking for Main Street businesses were brought to borough council.
During Tuesday evening's Royersford Borough Council meeting, one local business owner asked council to consider changing the parking allowed on Main Street. Anthony Berdomas, owner of Main Street Cafe, told council that he has heard from customers that they don't visit his restaurant because "they have to park far away." Berdomas said that he'll often see cars parked in the same spots on Main Street, near his business, for hours during the day. The municipal lot behind Borough Hall, between 3rd and 4th Avenues, is also often full of cars belonging to apartment residents. "People have told me they'll drive by, and if there's no parking, they go on down to Spring-Ford Diner because they have a parking lot," Berdomas said. Berdomas said he…

The parking is only limited to between 3am to 5am. So many cars can park on main street for the duration that the businesses are open. We think that a timed parking situation would be a good option for the Main Street.   more ›
Borough Council voted to start replacing old sodium streetlights with newer ones.
At Tuesday's Royersford Borough Council meeting, borough manager Michael Leonard showed off something he had been researching - getting LED streetlights to replace old lights in the borough. "So many of the lights are breaking," Leonard said. "These are guaranteed for ten years, even the bulbs." It was noted in public works director Craig Keffer's monthly report that the borough recently repaired 29 lights. "The parts are getting harder to get, the bulbs aren't made in the US anymore," Leonard said. Leonard said his research indicated that the lights would cost from $350-$400 each, but would be brighter than the current sodium lights. The current lights are costing the borough $35 each just to replace the bulb, before labor costs are …

Royersford Borough Manager told council at Tuesday's meeting that the borough will be receiving a grant from Montgomery County to be used for open space projects. Leonard said he is waiting on a letter to see how much the grant will be and when it will be disbursed, and it will be earmarked to work on Royersford's section of the Schuylkill River Trail to Arch Street. Leonard said he had some ideas for other open space funds in the boroughs possession. "We have $80,000 in open space money," Leonard said. "I would like to get bids to clean up the concrete and macadam along the river, put dirt down and replant grass along there." Council agreed that cleaning up along the river was a good use of the funds as it would make the area more …

The 2013 budget passed unanimously.
Royersford Borough Council passed its 2013 budget at Tuesday's meeting with no changes from its proposed version. The budget will include an increase of 1.5 mills for homeowners in the borough. It also includes an increase in sewer fees, from a minimum charge of $72 per quarter to a minimum of $77 per quarter. The borough's operating budget is just over $2.5M, and by township code they are required to present a balanced budget. The tax increase does just that. Council also announced the hiring of Craig Keffer, who will start working as the public works director and fire marshal on Dec. 17. Keffer replaces retiring public works director Conrad Bauer, and fills the fire marshal post left vacant by the sudden passing of Harry Van Horn, Jr…

The borough's tax rate will increase 1.5 mills.
Royersford Borough will be advertising a budget for 2013 that includes an increase from 6.7 mills to 8.2 mills, an increase of 22 percent. Council voted to post the budget for advertisement at Tuesday's meeting, which means it will have a public hearing and be voted on on Dec. 11. The new millage rate would represent an increase of about $150 per year on a $100,000 home. Sewer line testing The borough is planning on doing sewer line testing in the next few weeks throughout the borough. The testing uses smoke that is pumped into the sewer line, and the smoke will show any leaks in sewer lines. If a home has issues with traps on its sewer lines, the smoke will show in vents on the roof. The smoke is created by burning mineral oil, which …
