Man Involved in Hit-and-Run Found Growing Marijuana

received a call of a hit and run on N. 5th Street at about 9:10 p.m. on Oct. 5. Limerick Officer Chris Wienczek found the described striking vehicle in the driveway at 21 Springford Rd. in Royersford around 9:34 p.m., with extensive front drivers side outer panel. Officers on scene tried to make contact by knocking on doors, but no one answered. The lights were on inside.

Sgt. Robert Matalavage arrived on scene shortly after and looked in window. He reported he saw a marijuana stem on table. Walking toward the rear door, Matalavage then saw, in plain view, a potted marijuana plant next to a barrel containing large wattage light bulbs.

Matalavage went inside to search for anyone home, concerned that someone inside might try to destroy the evidence. The owner of the vehicle and resident of the house, Joshua Paul Whittaker, 33, arrived on scene at 10 p.m. He was walking around driveway and was told he couldn't enter. He said he knew. Royersford Officer Tom Godin told Whittaker that upon arriving on scene. Whittaker continued wandering around the property while on his cell phone.

At 10:15 p.m., Whittaker rushed into the house and locked the front door refusing to come out. Officers entered the house through the back and found him locked in the bathroom. Whittaker then pushed the bathroom door outward to keep officers from getting in. Officers kicked the door in and he was tasered twice. He was housed at Pottstown Police Department.

Detective Matthew Daywalt and Matalavage conducted a search after getting a warrant at 11:50 p.m. They found that he attempted to flush a large amount of marijuana down the toilet, but failed. They also found a large amount of baggies and containers, along with a scale, several bongs and pipes, which were all seized. Several books on growing marijuana were seized, along with a bag of psychedelic mushrooms. Loose marijuana and firearms were seized, along with a large amount of cash, forfeited to the District Attorney's office.

All marijuana was field tested positive. On Oct. 6, Whittaker was released on $10,000 bail. The preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 19 at 2 p.m.
